Today the Diocese of Shrewsbury honours its Principal Patron — Our Lady, Help of Christians — Auxilium Christianorum.

This beautiful title has deep roots. The invocation "Help of Christians" was included in the Litany of Loreto by Pope Saint Pius V in 1571, as a token of gratitude to the Most Holy Virgin, after Christendom's victory over Muslim forces in the famous Battle of Lepanto — a naval victory attributed to Our Lady's intercession.

The feast itself was born from another miraculous deliverance. During five years of captivity, Pope Pius VII appealed continuously to Our Lady under the invocation of "Help of Christians," remaining imprisoned in Savona from 1809 to 1812, making a vow to crown an image of the Mother of Mercy there, should he be granted his freedom. After the Congress of Vienna and the battle of Waterloo he returned to Rome, July 7, 1815 — and to give thanks to God and Our Lady, he instituted the feast of Our Lady, Help of Christians, to be celebrated on 24 May, the anniversary of his first return.

At the first meeting of the clergy of the new Diocese of Shrewsbury, it was unanimously agreed to petition the Holy See to place the Diocese under the special patronage of Our Blessed Lady and to permit calling her "Patroness under the title 'Help of Christians'." What a legacy of trust in Our Mother!

Mary, Help of Christians — pray for the Diocese of Shrewsbury, for our Bishop, our priests, and all the faithful across Cheshire, Shropshire, and beyond! 🙏

Happy feast of Pentecost from Shrewsbury Cathedral with prayers assured for those received into full communion with the Church this morning and for our young adults from across the Deanary who were confirmed today. Come, Holy Spirit, come.
And from your celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the 𝗗𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗯𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗹 — a joyful reminder of the faith and devotion that built this sacred place for the glory of God. ⛪✨

Shrewsbury Cathedral, dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians and St Peter of Alcantara, was designed by the renowned architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin in the Gothic Revival style and opened in 1856. Built of distinctive red sandstone, it became the cathedral of the Diocese of Shrewsbury in 1850.

On this feast of dedication, we give thanks for all who have worshipped here across generations, and we pray that this holy place may continue to be a beacon of faith, prayer, and hope for Shrewsbury and beyond. 🙏
