Hello FoLRC and happy new year,
The start of a new year is always a good time to pause and reflect on the previous year and to also think about the year ahead. Despite the many challenges covid and lockdowns presented the volunteers remained in good spirits and had a reasonable programme of events including the usual task days, memorial recording and wildlife surveying. One of the highlights was receiving a visit from the Mayor of Shrewsbury Cllr Julian Dean who was keen to hear about the work of the volunteers who help manage the cemetery in a sensitive way to maintain the beneficial habitat it provides for the local wildlife.
Looking to 2022, there are plans to refine the approach to looking after the old part of the cemetery to ensure certain areas are strimmed/cut at the optimum time. Plans are also in hand to see if green waste from cut flowers and such like can be composted on site and to hopefully install some rainwater butts to capture the rain for use for watering. These measures will be beneficial for the environment and should also save money over the longer term. We hope to have a full programme of task days and events in 2022, watch this space for further details. The photo is from the Mayors visit last year during the sunshine of July, a reminder of the better weather that lies ahead of us. We hope to see you soon.

One of our friends volunteers, John West has kindly shared some photo’s he took on 4th August during a butterfly survey carried out in the cemetery. Gatekeepers, Meadow Browns, a few small skippers, several Common Blues and also a Holly Blue as shown with its wings closed were seen. In addition, there were bees and hoverflies all going about their pollinating business. Thanks for the stunning photo’s.
