A wonderful evening at Shrewsbury Abbey following Evensong as we celebrated Peter Smith's 10th anniversary as Director of Music.

Over the past decade, Peter has made an outstanding contribution to the musical life of the Abbey, inspiring singers, musicians and congregation alike through his dedication, talent and leadership.

Thank you, Peter, for ten years of faithful service, excellence and commitment. We look forward to many more years of music-making at Shrewsbury Abbey.

Congratulations on this remarkable milestone!

Feeling the heat? Step into the peace and cool of Shrewsbury Abbey.

Our ancient stone walls keep the Abbey wonderfully cooler during the hot weather a place of calm in the middle of the day. Whether you’d like quiet reflection, prayer, revision, reading, or simply space to sit and think, you are very welcome here.

In the spirit of our monastic heritage of hospitality and sanctuary, the Abbey is open for all who need a moment of stillness and refreshment.

Dogs are welcome too, and we have water available for our four-legged visitors.

Come in, cool down, and enjoy the peace of the Abbey.

Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
and lighten with celestial fire;
thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart:

Thy blessèd unction from above
is comfort, life, and fire of love;
enable with perpetual light
the dullness of our blinded sight:

Anoint and cheer our soiled face
with the abundance of thy grace:
keep far our foes, give peace at home;
where thou art guide no ill can come.

Teach us to know the Father, Son,
and thee, of both, to be but One;
that through the ages all along
this may be our endless song,

Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Pentecost at Shrewsbury Abbey ✨🕊️

Pentecost is one of the great festivals of the Christian Church. In the Church of England, we celebrate the day when the Holy Spirit came to Jesus’ disciples, filling them with courage, faith, and joy to share the good news with the world. It is often called the “birthday of the Church” a reminder that God is still at work through ordinary people today.

Whether you are a regular churchgoer, curious about faith, or simply looking for a place of peace and welcome, we would love to see you this Pentecost at Shrewsbury Abbey.

Join us tomorrow for our Pentecost services: 11:00am Mass and 3:00pm Solemn Choral Evensong.

Come and celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, uplifting worship, and the warmth of community. Everyone is welcome.

Wow!

Wow!

Shrewsbury Abbey was founded 943 years ago - in 1083 - as a Benedictine Monastery by Roger de Montgomery, Norman Earl of Shrewsbury and one of the greatest magnates in William the Conqueror's England.

In the Domesday Book of 1086 - yes, that Domesday Book - the Abbey is recorded as a work in progress:

🪶 "In the City of SHREWSBURY Earl Roger is building an Abbey and has given to it the monastery of St Peter where the parish church of the City was."

At this time, Shrewsbury was recorded as a 'city' of only 86 households - sounds tiny, but in fact that grand figure put it in the largest 20% of English settlements at the time!
