St Matthew's Church, Sheffield The Ancient Faith relevant for today
All are welcome! Sunday: Solemn Mass 11:00am & Said Mass 6:00pm
Weekday Mass 12:30pm Saturdays 9:30am

Perhaps the best kept secret in the centre of Sheffield is St Matthew's church situated in Carver Street. The church was built to serve a densely populated area of what we would now call 'Victorian slums', although if you talk to older members of the congregation who were brought up in the locality, it was heaven itself! The foundation stone of the church was laid on June 1st 1854, the consecratio

n taking place on June 6th 1855. The church celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2005. Since its foundation St. Matthew's has seen many changes and has had an interesting, even distinguished history. A flagship of the Anglo-Catholic movement offering rich elaborate ceremonial, today serving a bustling city centre, with a multitude of shops, offices, bars, restaurants, and night clubs in its immediate proximity. We are a welcoming and diverse congregation and we invite you to join any of our regular services. Masses:

Holy Days 12:30 & 20:00pm

Bank Holidays 10:00am

Every Wednesday we have a Said Mass at 12:30pm and a Said Mass with Healing Ministries at 6:00pm which includes a time for anointing and laying on of hands for healing of body, mind, and spirit.

"Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
- James 5:13-15

God, for ever and ever. Amen.

What an amazing few weeks we have had.

From our pilgrimages to The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham to Baptisms and First Holy Communions on Pentecost and our procession and First Holy Communion on Corpus Christi.

Our Rosary Challenge reached 570 rosaries prayed in May. That's 170 more than the 400 target. Thank you to all who took part.

And thanks to our generous donors, the chancel gates have been guilded with gold leaf. Please do come and take a look.

We are truly blessed.

ABOUT PETER CAIN:

Peter graduated with Honours from Huddersfield University in 1996, majoring in classical guitar performance. His performing has taken him country-wide and he has played alongside some high calibre ensembles in concerts from string quartets to full orchestras. His teaching has been equally rewarding and it has been a privilege to work with students who have gone on to achieve degrees and diplomas; some also becoming performers/composers in their own right.

Currently, Peter is nearing 20 years guitar teaching at the North Halifax Grammar School and is also in his second year as guitar tutor at the Crossley Heath Grammar School. Combined with his private, solo vocal work and professional choral singing for Sheffield Cathedral Choir, Peter leads a busy but highly enjoyable musical life.
