Opened in 1836, Sheffield General Cemetery is one of the earliest commercial cemeteries in Britain and the final resting place of 87,000 people, including notable figures such as the founders of the Cole Brothers department store, and George Bassett, the founder of the Bassett's confectionery compa

ny. Now a peaceful green space and Grade II* listed park (the highest designation in Sheffield) it is also a Conservation Area, Local Nature Reserve, and home to the city’s largest collection of listed monuments and buildings, including the Catacombs, Anglican Church, Gatehouse, Nonconformist Chapel and Egyptian Gateway. Managed by Sheffield General Cemetery Trust (Registered Charity Number: 1103158), the site hosts tours, educational workshops, and conservation projects, encouraging visitors to explore its history or simply enjoy its quiet beauty. The Trust also stewards the restored Samuel Worth Chapel, a striking Grade II* venue now welcoming arts, music, weddings and community events in the heart of this unique historic site.

Sheffield General Cemetery is home to some of the most fascinating figures in the city's history. These tours take you through their life stories, the French-inspired catacombs, listed monuments and memorials and into 190 years of Sheffield's past 📜

🏛️ Significant Sights 🏛️

On this day 184 years ago, Chartist activist Samuel Holberry died aged just 27 🖤

Samuel’s grave is one of our Significant Sights here at the cemetery - he was a leader of the Chartist movement in Sheffield and had peacefully campaigned for the right of working men to vote at a time political power was reserved for the wealthy. He was betrayed, arrested and denied the right to defend himself at trial - illegally forced to work a treadmill as his health deteriorated.

When his funeral came, Sheffield came to a standstill. Shops closed, thousands lined the streets and people climbed trees to watch the procession pass. He was brought to Sheffield General Cemetery, where he rests today.

As Sheffield celebrates the Migration Matters Festival from tomorrow, Friday 19th June, we’re thinking about the people from across the globe who made their home here and whose stories are held in the ground of this cemetery 🏛️

Our book Incomers, written by one of our research volunteers, traces the journeys of people buried here who travelled from every corner of the world to Sheffield - and whose lives helped build the diverse, connected city we know today 🌎💚

One of those people is John Figorski - born in Russian Poland, a political exile who fled to England after fighting in the Hungarian uprising in 1848. He arrived with nothing, found his way to Sheffield and built a life here. This cemetery became his final resting place.

Where better to discover how life finds a way? 🌱✨

Sheffield General Cemetery has been a place of rest for nearly 190 years, and in that time nature has quietly and persistently made it its own. The woodland grew, the plants flourished and today a dedicated team of volunteers take care of the habitats that have taken root here 🌳

On Sunday 19th July, local botanist Gerry Firkins will lead you on a gentle guided Plants Tour of the cemetery. With decades of experience teaching plant identification, Gerry has a way of making you see somewhere familiar completely differently.

Folk at The Chapel is back this July! 🎶🏛️

We’re welcoming KYTH & Ric Booth on Thursday 16th July to the Samuel Worth Chapel for an evening of contemporary folk and we can’t wait!

KYTH are Druid-drone wyrd folk exploring perspectives of the more-than-human-world, while Ric Booth is a multi-instrumentalist and composer whose music weaves together a multitude of experimental sounds.
