Sheffield General Cemetery Trust keeps the Cemetery looking beautiful for all to enjoy.

Opened in 1836, Sheffield General Cemetery is one of the earliest commercial cemeteries in Britain and the final resting place of 87,000 people, including notable figures such as the founders of the Cole Brothers department store, and George Bassett, the founder of the Bassett's confectionery company. Now a peaceful green space and Grade II* listed park (the highest designation in Sheffield) it is also a Conservation Area, Local Nature Reserve, and home to the city’s largest collection of listed monuments and buildings, including the Catacombs, Anglican Church, Gatehouse, Nonconformist Chapel and Egyptian Gateway. Managed by Sheffield General Cemetery Trust (Registered Charity Number: 1103158), the site hosts tours, educational workshops, and conservation projects, encouraging visitors to explore its history or simply enjoy its quiet beauty. The Trust also stewards the restored Samuel Worth Chapel, a striking Grade II* venue now welcoming arts, music, weddings and community events in the heart of this unique historic site.

This weekend, during the INTERTWINING installation with Sensoria Festival, our bookstall will be open in the Samuel Worth Chapel and it's the perfect chance to pick up a piece of Sheffield's history 📚

Every book is written by our fantastic Volunteer Research Team, who give their time freely to uncover and share the stories of the people buried here. Every purchase directly supports the ongoing work of Sheffield General Cemetery Trust to protect and maintain this special place.

Pop in, have a browse and take a little bit of the Sheffield's history home with you 🏛️❤️

WE DID IT! 🎉

Our Aviva Communities Fund campaign has ended and together we raised £30,551 for Sheffield General Cemetery Trust, passing our final stretch target of £30,000!

To everyone who donated or shared our appeal, thank you. Every one of you has helped protect a green space that protects Sheffield 💚🌳

As summers get hotter and downpours get heavier, it's becoming a crucial protector for Sheffield, cooling the city, soaking up heavy rain and cleaning the air. A well-maintained, accessible green space also makes lives healthier and happier, and it only happens because of them!

Where Heritage Meets Nature 🌳

Sheffield General Cemetery is a park of the buried and the living. Beneath headstones and monuments rest wealthy Sheffielders and ordinary people alike, and all around them nature now thrives - nesting in the woodland and buzzing around wildflowers. And with hotter summers and heavier downpours on the way, it's now a crucial protector for the city, cooling it down, soaking up heavy rain and cleaning the air.

Our volunteers carefully maintain that balance of heritage and nature and your donations support the Trust's ongoing work, including the Volunteer Manager who keeps it all going.
