Letter to the The Salvation Army Sheffield Castle on Pentecost Sunday

Dear friends,

This Pentecost Sunday, we remember the day everything changed, when God’s Spirit blew through a room full of ordinary people and turned fear into courage, confusion into clarity, and isolation into community.

Pentecost wasn’t a polite breeze; it was a holy disruption. A windstorm in a prayer meeting. A fire that didn’t destroy but purified. It was God saying, “You don’t have to do this in your own strength anymore.”
That same Spirit still moves among us today, in our homes, our streets, and our church halls.

The fire of Pentecost doesn’t burn us down; it burns away the lies we’ve believed about ourselves. It reminds us that we are not defined by our past or our failures, but by God’s love and purpose.
And the miracle of that day wasn’t just that people spoke, it was that everyone heard. Each person understood the message in their own language. That’s what God does: He speaks hope in the language of every heart.

The first church was born that day, and it looked beautifully simple, people sharing what they had, eating together, praying together, supporting one another. It wasn’t polished or perfect, but it was real.
It looked like community, like we should be!

Pentecost is not just a story to admire; it’s a power to receive. The Spirit still comforts the broken, strengthens the weary, guides the lost, unites the divided, and sends the ordinary into extraordinary purpose.

So today, may we open our hearts again and pray:

Holy Spirit,
Blow through our tired places.
Burn away what holds us back.
Speak to us in the language of our hearts.
Make us a community that carries Your hope into every corner of this city.
Fill us again, not for our comfort, but for Your mission.
Amen

This morning we looked at Daniel 7 and 8

Daniel 7 The Beasts and the Ancient of Days

Daniel sees four terrifying beasts rising from the sea, symbolic of powerful empires that rise and fall.
But the heart of the chapter isn’t the beasts.
It’s the Ancient of Days taking His seat on the throne, and the Son of Man receiving a kingdom that will never pass away.

Takeaway:
Earthly kingdoms roar, but God reigns.
Human power is temporary; God’s rule is eternal.

Daniel 8 The Ram, the Goat, and the Little Horn

Daniel sees a ram (a great empire), then a goat (a greater empire), then a “little horn” that becomes arrogant and oppressive.
History shifts, rulers rise, leaders boast, nations clash.
But the vision ends the same way:
God sets the limit. God decides the timeline. God brings every ruler low.

Takeaway:
Even when evil looks powerful, it’s on a leash.
God is not threatened, surprised, or outmanoeuvred.

The Big Message for Today

Across both chapters, Daniel sees the same truth from different angles:

• Empires rise
• Leaders boast
• Nations shake
• History turns

But God is above it all.
His kingdom outlasts every kingdom.
His authority outranks every ruler.
His purposes stand when the world feels chaotic.

No matter what’s going on in the world, God is still on the throne.

Today at the Men’s Breakfast we had the pleasure of listening to Martyn Watson. Martyn Watson oversees chaplaincy across several Salvation Army locations, providing steady leadership and pastoral support to the chaplains he manages.

A huge thank you to everyone who donates clothing to us at The Salvation Army. Your generosity genuinely makes a difference in our community.

To help us keep things safe, tidy, and manageable for our volunteers, we kindly ask that donations are placed inside the collection bins.

If the bins are full, or if your items are too large to fit, please don’t leave them beside the bins. Instead, the Salvation Army Distribution Centre on Queens Road is the best place to take them, and they even accept electrical items too.

Thank you for supporting the work we do and for helping us care for people.
