Letter to the The Salvation Army Sheffield Castle on Pentecost Sunday
Dear friends,
This Pentecost Sunday, we remember the day everything changed, when God’s Spirit blew through a room full of ordinary people and turned fear into courage, confusion into clarity, and isolation into community.
Pentecost wasn’t a polite breeze; it was a holy disruption. A windstorm in a prayer meeting. A fire that didn’t destroy but purified. It was God saying, “You don’t have to do this in your own strength anymore.”
That same Spirit still moves among us today, in our homes, our streets, and our church halls.
The fire of Pentecost doesn’t burn us down; it burns away the lies we’ve believed about ourselves. It reminds us that we are not defined by our past or our failures, but by God’s love and purpose.
And the miracle of that day wasn’t just that people spoke, it was that everyone heard. Each person understood the message in their own language. That’s what God does: He speaks hope in the language of every heart.
The first church was born that day, and it looked beautifully simple, people sharing what they had, eating together, praying together, supporting one another. It wasn’t polished or perfect, but it was real.
It looked like community, like we should be!
Pentecost is not just a story to admire; it’s a power to receive. The Spirit still comforts the broken, strengthens the weary, guides the lost, unites the divided, and sends the ordinary into extraordinary purpose.
So today, may we open our hearts again and pray:
Holy Spirit,
Blow through our tired places.
Burn away what holds us back.
Speak to us in the language of our hearts.
Make us a community that carries Your hope into every corner of this city.
Fill us again, not for our comfort, but for Your mission.
Amen
