Underbank is a Unitarian Chapel set in glorious surroundings overlooking the Loxley Valley near Sheffield. Open most Sundays by 10.30am.

The congregation was founded in 1652 and the current building was opened in 1743.

Our service on Sunday 6th September will be in the Chapel and not our usual 'first-of the-month' service in the Schoolroom. This will be our Harvest Celebration led by Brigitte McCready.
Members are invited to bring their home-grown produce or the following items to be donated to the Stannington Food bank -

Pasta
Tinned spaghetti
Jars pasta sauce
Jars curry sauce
Cereals
UHT milk (blue or green)

Fresh fruit and vegetables especially tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce

Eggs

Or you can give a donation for the Foodbank instead.

There's no service on Sunday 23rd August but we are back on Sunday 30th for our joint service with friends from Fulwood Old Chapel. This service will have contributions from members of both congregations on the theme 'Departures'. Please join us at 11.00am in the chapel, followed by coffee and conversation.

Our service on Sunday 16th August will be led by Revd. Tom and Brigitte McCready in the Chapel at 11.00am. Tom and Brigitte join us from Doncaster Unitarians.

Please could members - or friends who follow us but don't always make it to services - help by contributing to the following services:

30th August – Karen Allison, ‘Departures’ - Joint service with Fulwood
We chose the theme ‘Departures’ as the opposite of ‘Arrivals’ which was the theme at the joint service at Fulwood in May. Please share your poems, music, personal experiences - we will be asking the members at Fulwood to do the same. You can interpret the theme in any way you wish.

6th September – Brigitte McCready, Harvest celebration
Members are invited to bring fresh fruit and vegetables, dry goods, jars and tinned foods to be donated to the Stannington Foodbank at Stanwood Church. Their requirements vary according to the supplies in their stores, so we’ll let people know nearer the time, what has been requested. 20th September – Joy Parker, Heritage and Anniversary service – ‘Everyday Histories, Ordinary Lives’
Although we are not having a Heritage Open Day this year, we have adopted this year’s theme for our service. We want to record and celebrate the lives of the people of Underbank. Tell us about your own life or choose someone who might be considered ‘ordinary’ but whose story should be told, especially if there is a connection to Underbank.

We don't have a service today at Underbank but members are welcome to join our friends at Upper Chapel Sheffield - Unitarian or Fulwood Old Chapel for their services.

Our first service in August is on Sunday 2nd in the Schoolroom at 11.00am. It will be in a cafe style to enable us to have conversations and discussions about Death.
Inspired by the work of 'Death Cafes' and the BBC programme ' We need to talk about Death' presented by Joan Bakewell, the service will allow members to share their feelings, beliefs and fears in a supportive environment. This is not about funeral planning, writing a Will or organising what will happen to your remains, it is not a space to talk about bereavement and grief, or to offer counselling.
It is simply a space to talk about death and dying, something we tend to avoid.
We expect there to be humour and laughter!
Let's talk about death so we can make the most of our lives.

The beautiful view across the Loxley valley at the edge of the Peak District, taken from our Schoolroom garden. In the top left on the hill is St. Nicholas' church at High Bradfield. Before the foundation of our congregation in 1652, residents from Stannington had to walk to this church.

Our service on Sunday 19th July is in the Chapel at 11.00am. It will feature favourite hymns selected by members of the congregation, who will say a little about their choice. The service will be led by Karen Allison and Karen Cockings. Coffee and chat afterwards.

Our service on Sunday 12th July will be led by Christina Coopland in the chapel at 11.00am.
This is the annual Flower Service or Flower Communion started by the Unitarian martyr Norbert Capek in 1923. We invite members to continue this tradition by bringing a flower which is placed in a vase at the front of chapel. At the end of the service, each member takes home a different flower. This symbolises the uniqueness of each individual and the diversity of our beliefs.
All are welcome to attend the service and enjoy coffee and chat afterwards.

Our service on Sunday 5th July is in the Schoolroom at 11.00am. This will be a joint service presented by Ameena Blake, the Moslem Chaplain from Sheffield University, with an introduction to Islam and our own Joy Parker, looking at Unitarianism. Similarities, common roots and differences will be explored. Everyone is welcome to join us with the usual coffee and conversation afterwards.

Our service on Sunday 28th June will be led by Marion Baker in the chapel. Marion is a long-time member of Upper Chapel and Treasurer of the Sheffield District Association of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches. She served on the General Assembly Executive Committee for several years and is still a very active Unitarian at both local and national levels. Marion knows Underbank very well as her husband, Reverend Ernest Baker (deceased) was minister here for 25 years. Please join us to give a hearty welcome to our old friend. Coffee and conversation afterwards.
