Sheffield people! This page is rarely updated these days. It was mainly in use when our building was run as a busy conference centre, renting rooms to many organisations throughout the week. That was true for about 30 years, effectively till COVID. We use the building differently now.
We do still have a big and lively Quaker meeting every Sunday, including a children's group. There's a Facebook group, Sheffield and Area Quakers you might like to join?

These beautiful pots are the work of our Friend, Emilie Taylor, and have been bought for display in the Walker Art Gallery. The caption with them, slightly edited, reads:
That Drop. Made 2025.
This refers to the beat drop in electronic dance music when a sudden change of rhythm occurs. And it links to the economic crash of the 1980s. The work shows women from Stoke in Trent who were part of the rave scene in the late 1980s. 'I like to depict women using their bodies joyfully with strength and freedom. The gold lustre venerates people and places not traditionally held in the light.'
I really want to go and see them for myself!

We NEED to find other groups who can use the MH alongside us. Sheffield based social enterprise Kaleido Arts for Wellbeing is hoping to use our incredible space in the heart of the city to run a termly programme of 5 creative wellbeing workshops and impact the lives of more people struggling with their mental health.
- inclusive. 22 nationalities have been supported in first 3 years with 82.4% from Black Asian Minority Ethnic groups.
- compassionate and caring. One female participant from South Africa said, “The people are very nice. They are more like a family to us. When we cry, they cry with us. I got the chance to speak out about my situation, which helped my wellbeing.”
- changing lives for good. Multiple testimonies testify to lifted mood, improved confidence, the joy of finding your voice and the freedom of self-expression.
- work is preventative and restorative, reducing reliance on more expensive forms of intervention. One female Trinidadian participant said, "The workshops are more effective than therapy because they enable me to feel connection and a sense of belonging."
- believe in empowerment. We are working with microgrant organisation Purple Shoots to develop Self-Reliant Groups to follow on from our creative workshops. These groups are all about support, savings, skill sharing and enterprise.

Currently, we are sharing our building with City of Sanctuary Sheffield, while their regular home in Chapel Walk is being renovated. Its good to have them there. Will try to post information about some of their activities.

GOING FORWARD - NEW PLANS
We are now going forward with plans to use our building in a different way.... and looking for other like-minded organisations to join us.
We are a large, vibrant Quaker meeting based in a fully accessible city centre building. Every Sunday our beautiful building is well-used with adults and children coming to Quaker worship. We can use different parts of the building for creative activities, children’s parties, dancing, office space, meeting rooms, shared meals and community events. For many years we let out rooms for meetings during the week but are now changing how we use our space.

We would now like to let out rooms long-term to one or more organisations or businesses that shares our values and will make good use of a flexible city centre base. We have good transport links, on-street parking and on-site bike parking.

Quakers will continue to use the ground floor but want to make better use of the first and lower ground floor rooms, flexible spaces which could serve a variety of purposes. We would be willing to offer a discount for an organisation interested in taking on a whole floor.

We are open to negotiation and seek tenants who share our values and are interested in finding a long-term rental arrangement. Might that be you? Please contact us to discuss possibilities.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

We are sorry to have to let you know that we are closing the lettings business at Sheffield Central Quaker Meeting House. Our current lettings arrangement - sharing our Meeting House with many groups, regular and one-off users of spaces for an evening or a day - is no longer financially viable.

From end September 2023 we will not be offering single session room hire. We are closing the business but not the building and Quaker Meetings and other activities will continue. If you have a booking with us over the next weeks and months, you will be contacted with more detailed information.

This has been a difficult decision, which we have not taken lightly. We are particularly sad to be saying farewell to lots of loyal customers and to our dedicated staff team.

While we are sad that we are having to make this change, we hope that this marks a new chapter for our building and our Quaker contribution to the life of the city. We welcome ideas and thoughts from individuals and organisations as we plan for the future use of our building. We would like to offer space to organisations we support/ who are in sympathy with Quaker values (https://www.quaker.org.uk/faith) who might be interested in subletting space for office or other longer-term uses. If you are interested in this, or have other ideas and suggestions to share, please contact us at [email protected].
