Tuesday Gathering

Tuesday Gathering Join us for our Tuesday evening gathering. We meet together for a simple meal, discussion, and worship. It’s an inclusive, safe space, to explore faith.

We believe the journey of faith is best done with others. So, we want to keep meeting, keep talking, keep sharing together. We believe God loves everyone, irrespective of race, ability, age, gender, or sexuality. So, that’s what we’re about. We believe faith is about doing, about getting involved in our world, living well, pursuing peace and justice. Ok so we’re not saying we’re perfect, or that t

his is easy, but we are committed to following Jesus’ teaching and living like this. We believe faith is about asking questions and seeking God through the bible, through prayer and worship. Sometimes there are more questions than answers but that’s when it gets interesting.

For the tears we cry tonight,
And the promise of resurrection too,
Alleluia, Alleluia.

For The Souls Of Our Departed

For empty spaces at dinner tables.
For graduations and weddings and birthdays not attended.
For family not met.
For hugs that will never be given and calls that will never be answered.

For all the saints who’ve known your love.

For those who died trying to make the world a better place, and for those who died trying to make a better place for themselves in the world.

For those who have died in the broken heart of this city.

For those who have died on the battlefield.

For those who have died as a result of racism, or homophobia, or sectarianism, or gender inequality.

For those who have died at the hand of their own demons.

For the people whose hands I’ve held as they died. For the people who I couldn’t bring back to life.

For the times I send someone into a room to say goodbye to their person, and the ones I can’t get there in time.

For the person for whom the wail of a siren broke from Great Western Road into the middle of Psalm 23, a brief invasion of chaos to remind us that the tragedy goes on, always, and that our humanity is in grieving it, yes, but in fighting it too.

For the names and the names and the names of the people we have remembered by name.
For the safekeeping of those names throughout the year.
For the people who they were loved by, and are loved by.

For the people who I love and see no longer.

For those who die alone.

For those who will die tonight.

For those who die with no one else to pray for them.

For all who here sought and here found him, whose journey is ended and peril is past.

For everyone who we have ever loved who is now safe with God.

For the tears we cry tonight, and for the promise of the Resurrection too.

Alleluia, Alleluia.

With thanks to the 'Wandering Medic' Beth Routledge for her beautiful words of death and resurrection. Alleluia.

Join us for Wilderness Worship this Lenten season.

Following Jesus' 40 days in the desert, many have journeyed into the wilderness to encounter God away from the distractions and comforts of everyday life.

Join us at Sheffield Cathedral's Tuesday Gathering for two evenings in Lent and seek God through words and song, silence and prayer as we explore this wilderness path.

This is a safe and sacred space where all are genuinely welcomed.

12th and 26th March
7.30pm, Sheffield Cathedral

We'll also be thinking about Lent...

Abstaining or fasting during Lent, the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, started as a Christian commemoration of Jesus' sacrifice during his 40 days of fasting in the desert leading up to his crucifixion.

People can pick up advice on what to give up for Lent in many places on social media, with offerings from many organisations that are not rooted in any faith beliefs...for instance publications have commercialised the idea with things like lists of unhealthy foods to give up for Lent or the International Business Time's list of abstaining suggestions like alcohol and meat.

But what if many of these sacrificial, difficult ideas making the rounds might have missed the boat? I'm not objecting to the source of the Lenten suggestions, but to the idea that deprivation and guilt are the way to go.

Mystic John Chrysostom said:"No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sigh continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great."

Can we find Lenten observances that don't draw attention to the practitioner?

Lent has often morphed into a season that's more about us and what we do or give up than it is a season where we are immersed in the suffering and death of Jesus as Good News.

While Lent is an appealing time to curb selfishness and put others first, shouldn't we be doing that anyway? It's too easy to make Lent into a season about us. "Here's your problem and here's your 40-day plan to get over it."

What if that becomes more of a 'me' Lent and not so much about Jesus?

This Catholic blog offers some really interesting ideas... https://lifeteen.com/blog/weird-lent-ideas-that-will-make-you-holier/

What do you think? See you Tuesday.
