Cathedral Church of St Marie, Sheffield

Cathedral Church of St Marie, Sheffield St. Marie's is the motherchurch of all the catholic churches in Sheffield. Please wait at the back until they are finished.

It is much loved and much used and is a haven of prayer and peaceliness in a busy city centre. Built in 1850 by local architect M.E.Hadfield, it is a fine example of a Victorian church based on a neo-gothic design. The cathedral has a fine array of stained glass windows including designs but Hardman and Pugin. You are most welcome to look around, but please be aware that services may be taking place.

Last Sunday, we gathered in prayer and witness for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.

The procession, accompanying Our Lord through the city centre of Sheffield, was a public expression of faith, devotion and gratitude.

Together, we honoured the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. It was a joyful and prayerful occasion that reflected the unity and faith of our Cathedral family.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered and helped make this special celebration possible.

Eileen Maher, on behalf of the PPC, made a presentation today to Bishop Ralph in thanksgiving for his 12 years as Bishop of Hallam.

The picture of St Alphonsus Liguori was purchased following discussions about a suitable gift for the Bishop. It will remain in Houlden Hall.

Commenting on the gift, Bishop Ralph said how good it was to see a picture of a young St Alphonsus, as he is often depicted as an old man. He thanked everyone for their thoughtful gift.

He will preside at Mass at 11:30am at the Cathedral Church of St Marie. This will be a wonderful opportunity for us to give thanks to Almighty God for the...

On 24 and 25 April, we were blessed to welcome the Centenary Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady, along with the sacred relics of Saints Jacinta and Francisco, at St Marie's Cathedral. We gathered in prayer, reflection, and quiet devotion, marking a truly special moment.
As the visitation came to a close, we carry forward the peace, hope, and spiritual renewal it inspired. May the example of Our Lady and these young saints continue to guide and strengthen us in our daily lives. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
We are grateful to our parishioners, Maria Fletcher and Alex Rixom, for sharing their photos and videos with us. โค๏ธ

Two weeks ago, we were blessed to welcome three Franciscan friars from the United States to our Diocese for a day of reflection, faith, and inspiration.

On Friday, 17th April, they led two wonderful gatherings focused on how we can share the Gospel in todayโ€™s world. The first, held at St Marie's Cathedral following the 12.30 pm Mass, brought together young people and young adults for a meaningful and engaging session. Later that evening, a wider group gathered at St Francis of Assisi, beginning with Mass at 6.00 pm, for a further opportunity to reflect and be encouraged in faith.

We are grateful for the friarsโ€™ presence, their witness, and the conversations they inspired. May the seeds planted that day continue to grow in our hearts and in our community.๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Faith in Our Community: A Public Witness
We are always moved by the ways our parishioners live out their faith in the heart of our city. โ›ชโœจ

One of our Cathedral parishioners, Joseph Durham, organises a monthly Outdoor Rosary in front of Sheffield City Hall. This gathering is a powerful sign of Christian faith and a beautiful way to bring the peace of the Rosary to the streets of Sheffield.

If you are in the city center, please consider joining Joseph Durham and others to offer a decade or two of prayer for our community.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Event Details:
When: Wednesday, 8th April

Where: In front of Sheffield City Hall

Time: 1:30 pm

This gathering typically takes place on the Wednesday nearest to the 10th of every month. Itโ€™s a simple, yet strong, public witness of our devotion.

As part of this yearโ€™s Lenten reflections, Fr Christian from St Marieโ€™s Cathedral continues his series of short, one-minute thoughts on words that carry depth and meaning in our Christian life.

This third reflection turns to ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป โ€” a word that speaks of restoration, of being brought back, of beginning again. In the Christian story, redemption is not something we achieve on our own, but something offered to us through Godโ€™s mercy and grace.

Lent invites us to remember that no matter how far we may feel from God, His love always opens a path back.

Whether you attend Mass regularly, occasionally, or are simply taking a moment to reflect during Lent, you are warmly invited to pause and listen.

No pressure. Just a minute to consider what redemption might mean in your own life.
