A lovely read!
Our first interview of the week is with our wonderful Liz Gunn!
ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴜɴɪᴛ/ꜱ ᴅᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴠᴏʟᴜɴᴛᴇᴇʀ ᴡɪᴛʜ?
I run 2nd Sheppey Rainbows and 2nd Sheppey Brownies, and at present I also run 1st Minster Rainbows, until someone is able to take over, as it was in great danger of closing.
ᴡʜʏ ᴅɪᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄʜᴏᴏꜱᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴠᴏʟᴜɴᴛᴇᴇʀ ᴡɪᴛʜ ɢɪʀʟɢᴜɪᴅɪɴɢ?
I don't think I chose to volunteer with Girlguiding, I think it chose me, I have never left from being a Brownie age 7, then a Guide, a Ranger then a leader at 17.
ʜᴏᴡ ʟᴏɴɢ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ʙᴇᴇɴ ᴠᴏʟᴜɴᴛᴇᴇʀɪɴɢ?
This year marks my 46th year as a leader.
ᴡʜᴀᴛ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ɢᴀɪɴᴇᴅ ꜰʀᴏᴍ ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴛɪᴍᴇ ᴀꜱ ᴀ ᴠᴏʟᴜɴᴛᴇᴇʀ?
I have gained many life skills, it has given me the opportunity to try many new things and most importantly I have gained many friends who have become my guiding family.
ᴡʜᴀᴛ’ꜱ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴇꜱᴛ ᴛʜɪɴɢ ʏᴏᴜ’ᴠᴇ ᴅᴏɴᴇ ᴡʜɪʟᴇ ᴠᴏʟᴜɴᴛᴇᴇʀɪɴɢ?
There are many best things I have done while volunteering, I love meeting new girls, getting to know them and watching them grow, which I think is a great honour. I love sleepovers and spending a lot of time with the girls which is special. Another amazing thing is seeing the girls grow up and then come back as a young leader, or even a leader like Ellen Lennox-Gurr, who was my Brownie over 20 years ago and now is a guider with me in Rainbows and Brownies, has opened a Guide Unit and is now Division Commissioner of Sheppey, I am very proud of her.

Being a volunteer in Guiding is fun, and very rewarding. We are a friendly and supportive group of people. Get in touch and go and visit a Unit to see what you didn't know you were missing.
If you would like to get involved feel free to message us or follow the link to find out more https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/become-a-volunteer/register-to-volunteer/
