🪑 We have a new bench in the burial area, near to where the most recent burials are sited.

🪵 It has been designed and handcrafted by local bespoke joinery specialists The Wonder of Wood, using oak harvested from Cappleside woodlands 🌿.

🌳 With its simple, classical design, it looks perfectly at home in the natural setting, nestled under the old ash tree — a peaceful spot for reflection and remembrance. 🕊️

The wildflowers and blossom trees have truly flourished in the dry, sunny Spring — especially the beautiful hawthorn and guelder rose (pictured here).
The new willow arbour, lovingly woven into shape by Gordon, has also brought a lovely, peaceful spot of shade to the area.

Former Rathmell resident, Pat Gibson, who moved to Shavington in Cheshire some years ago, revisits Brocklands and appraises how the Natural Burial Site has grown and developed over the past twenty years or so and how this might provide a foretaste for Santune Meadows Natural Burial Site - the newly established Natural Burial Ground in Shavington 🌱🌳

I am taking part in the 2024 Cave Rescue Organisation Ingleborough Challenge on Saturday 18th May 2024.

I shall be WALKING the 26 mile marathon route and asking for sponsorship in support of Rathmell School Trust. Any donations towards this worthy cause would be very gratefully received.

Following the opening of the new burial area in November 2022, two new oak seats have been added to the burial site.

They are placed between the old and new sections and being up on the higher ground have good views over all the burial area, as well as taking in the view up the valley to Settle and beyond. The new area does require a longer walk from the car park, but is compensated by an even better view of Penyghent and now Ingleborough too.

The new 'seats' (we are not allowed to call them benches!) have been expertly designed and crafted by Alan Adey, employing traditional construction methods and using our own oak from Cappleside woodlands. They have been much admired and regularly used since their installation.

Alan lives locally and works at Brocklands, being an integral part of the team on burial days and carrying out regular maintenance work on the site.

We've recently installed an oak bench, which looks out over the newly-opened area of the burial site. This creates yet another peaceful spot to reflect and take in the Dales views.

The bench has been designed and crafted by Alan Adey from oak grown on the Cappleside estate 🌳🪵

The extension area has now been opened up and has been used for its first two burials. The newly-opened section has changed the overall feel of the site, as you look back from the new to the old grave area.

The extensive vista now includes views of Ingleborough as well as Penyghent.

Very soon now the new extension at Brocklands will be complete. The fencing has been installed to keep the grazing cattle out.

After the arrival of materials today, this weekend will see the creation of wood chip paths and a gravel entrance road.
