Dear brothers and sisters,
In this weekend’s First Reading, Stephen, the first martyr, asks the risen Christ if he too might pass from death to new life and like Jesus, prays for his executioners. In the Second Reading, St. John describes how Christ’s Second Coming will bring to completion God’s plan for “a new heaven and a new earth.” In the Gospel, Jesus prays for His disciples of all generations. Those who unite themselves to Jesus are united to the Father through Him; thus united to God, they are sent as Jesus was, and for the same mission: to reveal God as love, giving life itself for others.

Newsletter/Bulletin/Epistle - call it what you will!
For almost 3 years, this newsletter has been circulated to more than 160 parishioners by email, post or hand delivery. Not having to print as many hard copies as we did in the past has saved the Parish a considerable amount of money and not having to throw away several bulletins each week has been good for the environment! As well as these obvious benefits, more people than ever have been kept in touch with what is happening in the Parish!
However, following the Bishops’ invitation for people to return to Mass and at the request of a small number of parishioners, a printed bulletin will return for a “trial period” beginning on Trinity Sunday (12th, June).
From that date the emailed newsletter will be suspended.
However, if bulletins continue to be thrown away, the email will return and this change will be permanent.

RECENT COLLECTIONS - Offertory: £1309.90; Priests Training Fund: £319.35;
Funeral Collection (Jinks): £140.00; Wedding Donation: £103.00; Candles £110.15. Sincere thanks to all who support the Parish financially.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN SELBY invite you to join them for a Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at 4pm next Sunday in the grounds of Selby Abbey (in the Abbey, if wet).
There is a similar service at St. Mary’s (C of E), Carlton at 10.00am on the same Sunday.
Prayers for the Queen will be offered at all our Parish Masses next weekend.

God bless
Fr. Wilson.

Dear brothers and sisters,
As we prepare for our annual commemoration of the sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, this weekend’s readings give us a small snapshot of how the Church operated in the past and how it continues to operate in the present. The Holy Spirit, the gift of God’s love, is our assurance that we, like our predecessors, the apostles, are not on our own as we to try live out Christ’s teachings and witness to his gift of peace before other people.

Dear brothers and sisters,
The image of sheep and shepherd described in the Gospel remains a cherished image of God’s care for us. It also describes the heart of the prayer of contemplation. This intimate encounter with the risen Lord in prayer is a glimpse of what we hope one day to obtain: to be at peace in the presence of the Good Shepherd. Today, Jesus tells us that those who belong to him “listen to my voice” In our busy world, full of distractions, we each need to take time to listen to the voice of Jesus and respond in love to his call.

Masses are celebrated in our Parish as follows:

In Selby:
Saturday: 6.00pm & Sunday: 9.30am

FR. PATRICK O’CONNELL was a curate here in Selby from 1937 until 1943.
Born in Cork, he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Cardiff in 1935. Two years later he was seconded to our Diocese and came to Selby. On leaving St. Mary’s he returned to Cardiff and was appointed as Parish Priest of St. Frances of Rome, Ross on Wye where he remained until he retired back to Ireland. He died in Cork on 12th, May, 1991. May he rest in peace.

SINCERE THANKS to the ladies who for the past two & half years have been hand delivering this newsletter. Between them, Mary and Ann delivered 31 newsletters to parishioners still unable to come to church.
The newsletter will continue to be hand delivered (or posted) and so if you know someone who would like one, please let me know.
Someone phoned to express their gratitude for receiving a copy through the generosity of another parishioner who passed theirs on!
Unable to come to church these past two years, this parishioner now feels “in touch” with the Parish once more!

Dear brothers and sisters,
The celebration of Frst Holy Communion is a significant moment in the life of any Parish community. For our Parish, this weekend’s celebration is particularly significant as it is the first for three years. As we pray for the children and their families, perhaps we should reflect upon the importance of the Eucharist in our own lives. Celebrating Mass at the Parish of “St. Internet” is all well and good, but it doesnt give us the opportunity to receive Holy Communion. As life begins to return to normal, perhaps this weekend’s celebration will provide a spur for those parishioners who have been absent from Sunday Mass to return.

Weekly Masses are celebrated in our Parish as follows:

In Selby:
Saturday: 6.00pm & Sunday: 9.30am
Wednesday & Thursday: 10.00am.

In Carlton:
Sunday: 11.15am
Tuesday: Funeral Mass for Richard Jackson at 11.00 am.
Friday: 1.00pm Mass at Holy Family High School. Please report to Reception on arrival at school.

EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT - on Wednesday before Mass, beginning at 9.30am.

PRIVATE PRAYER - On Wednesday, our Selby church is open for private prayer after Mass until midday.

THIS WEEKEND, 36 young parishioners will receive Holy Communion for the first time. It has been a long journey for them and their families! They began their preparation in June, 2019 and made their First Confession the following month. The preparation programme was suspended in March, 2020 as we went into lockdown & resumed just before Easter after a break of two years! Let us pray they have a wonderful, and much deserved, celebration!!

WELCOME to Jayden Michael Callaghan & Nikolas Novak who were baptised recently.

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER/EPISTLE - When the first lockdown began in March 2020, I started to send a weekly newsletter (I call it “My Epistle”) by email to those Parishioners who requested one. At the same time, three Parishioners very kindly offered to hand deliver copies to friends and neighbours.
This practice continues and at the moment 104 newsletters are sent out by email, a further 49 are hand delivered & 12 are posted. This means that each week 165 parishioners receive a copy of the Parish Newsletter. I also know that some who receive a hard copy pass it on to neighbours, thus raising the total of recipients!
Before the start of the pandemic, 140 bulletins were printed each weekend to be collected at the back of church (many were subsequently thrown away).
So we are currently reaching more Parishioners than we ever did in the past!
That being the case, I can see no reason to go back to the “old system”
If you know someone who would like to receive a weekly newsletter by any of the above methods, please contact the Parish Office (703345)

Easter Monday Tombola at Carlton Towers - Margaret Kilner writes, “A huge “Thank You” to all who sent prizes, donated money, helped on the day and came along to support this fund raising event. The total banked is £370.50 a very good result. It was lovely to meet up again with people we have not seen for quite a while. Best wishes to you all.”

Members of Portholme Church are holding a fund raising evening on 7th May. to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee as well as Portholme’s 10th Birthday and the URC’s 50th anniversary. They are having an evening of modern hymns, or at least those hymns that have been written in the last 70 years, and are inviting people across the town to submit a list of their favourites.
Votes for hymns should be sent to [email protected]

CELEBRATION OF MARRIED LIFE - Saturday 14th May, at St. Anne’s Cathedral, Leeds at 12 noon for couples and their families celebrating a significant wedding anniversary this year and for those whose anniversaries occurred during the years of the pandemic. There will be an opportunity for couples to renew their marriage vows during the liturgy.
If you would like to take part in this celebration, please fill out the application form which is available at the back of church and send it to: Miss Anne Cooke, Bishop’s House, 13 North Grange Road, Leeds, LS6 2BR
or email it to [email protected] by Tuesday, 3rd May 2022.

SINCERE THANKS to all parishioners who sent Easter cards & presents to the Presbytery. Your kindness is much appreciated!

A REFLECTION FOR EASTER (& BEYOND!)
“Go to Mass on Sundays: This is the bare minimum the Church has set for the faithful to stay in the state of grace. God gives us 168 hours of life every week, and as long as we are physically able to get to church on Sunday, he asks us for just one of those hours back as a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. But it’s not God who benefits from our attendance at Mass. God empties himself so that we can receive the life-giving grace of the Eucharist. It’s not always easy, but it’s simple.”
Fr. Connor Danstrom (Chaplain and Director of the St. John Paul II Newman Center, University of Illinois, Chicago).

May the peace of the risen Christ be with you all!

Dear brothers and sisters,
The liturgy of this weekend’s Mass reflects the drama of this holiest of weeks in the Church’s calendar. Our Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem is quickly followed by the events of His Passion, told for us today by St. Luke. Richard Jackson died peacefully in Snaith Hall Nursing Home this morning (Friday). Richard was a loyal friend to many parishioners in Carlton and a true servant of the Church. St. Mary’s church in Carlton was his life and he served it in several capacities for many years. Richard was also a loyal friend to Holy Family High School and a fervent advocate of the school, having served for several years as a Governor. I used to call him “Mr Carlton” and he was a great support to me personally since I came to the Parish in 2012 and I know that all my predecessors would feel exactly the same.
May he rest in peace.

As life in the Parish is now more or less back to normal, I hope to see many of you at the services during Holy Week and over ther Easter weekend.

God bless
Fr. Wilson
