Community Artwork Inspired by Psalm 23 Unveiled in Scourie

A new community artwork celebrating the Good Shepherd, Psalm 23 and Scourie’s crofting heritage has been unveiled at Scourie Church Hall following a collaboration between local artist and storyteller Lizzie McDougall, pupils from Scourie Primary School and the Assynt, Rosehall and Scourie Church of Scotland.
The project was made possible through funding from SSPCK and involved children exploring the theme of the Good Shepherd through storytelling, art and music before contributing ideas, drawings and creative elements that helped shape the final artwork.
The unveiling ceremony brought together pupils, families and members of the wider community. Children performed a variety of musical items, including a contemporary version of Psalm 23 by Stuart Townend, with some pupils singing and others playing instruments.
Rev. Iain MacLeod said: “The image of the Good Shepherd has been part of the story of this community for generations. Through this project, we have seen children engage with that story in fresh and creative ways, connecting faith, local heritage and the care that lies at the heart of both shepherding and community life.”
The artwork reflects both the biblical image of the Good Shepherd and the crofting traditions that remain an important part of life in Scourie. At this time of year, when lambs can be seen running and playing across local crofts, it celebrates themes of care, stewardship, belonging and hope.
Artist Lizzie McDougall described the project as a collaborative effort, with children contributing wildflowers, sheep, birds, bees and butterflies that were incorporated into the final design.
The artwork was unveiled by Jana MacDonald, a long-standing member of the community and church. Jana was herself a pupil at Scourie Primary School before later returning as a teacher, while her own children also attended the school. She has also served as a Sunday School teacher in the hall where the artwork now has its permanent home.
The completed artwork will remain on display in Scourie Church Hall as a lasting celebration of the community’s faith, heritage, creativity and connection to the local landscape.
