The candies lit at Mass for those who have died in the last 12 months remain alight at Our Lady’s altar, keeping our prayers before the Queen of Heaven, mother of the King of Kings.

A PRAYER FOR THE TURKISH PEOPLE

(Adapted from a prayer offered by the people of Haiti following the earthquake in Jan 12, 2010)

Lord, at times such as this, when we realize that
the ground beneath our feet is not as solid as we
had imagined, we plead for your mercy.

As the life crumbles about the people in Turkey,
help us realise how small we all truly are on this
ever-changing, ever-moving, fragile planet we call
home. Give us the strength to hear, to care, to act.

Today, so many people are hurt and afraid. They
wait in fear of the next tremor. Of the next
collapse. They hear the cries of the injured amid
the rubble. They roam the streets in shock at what
they see, looking for their loved ones.

Yet, you are the God who hears the cries of your
people. And you have promised never to forget us.
So, comfort them, Lord, in this disaster. Be their
rock when the earth refuses to stand still and
shelter them when their homes no longer exist.

Embrace in your arms those who have died.
Console the hearts of those who mourn and ease
their pain. Pour your healing balm on the injured.

Pierce, too, our hearts with compassion,
we who watch from afar, safe in our homes.
Move us to act swiftly, to give generously, to help.

Give us grace to pray unceasingly for those
without hope. And once the shaking has ceased,
the images of destruction have stopped filling the
news, and our thoughts return to life's daily
rumblings, let us not forget that we are all your
children, and they our brothers and sisters.

We are all the work of your hands, and our help is
in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and
earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and
forever.
Amen

This morning, at St Mary's Aughton, we said goodbye to, and gave thanks for the life and work of Elizabeth Hughes, who to us in Scarisbrick is better known as Mrs Burke , the head teacher of St Marys from 1970-1988.

Born in 1930, at her first school in Liverpool she taught Cilla Black and returned to teaching after the early death of her first husband. She devoted her life to her girls and teaching before taking early retirement in 1988.

We learnt she enjoyed travelling, never travelled light, and had a love of languages, starting to learn Italian in her late 80s.

She was a 'good and faithful servant' May she rest in peace and rise in glory Amen

In setting up the exhibition last Sunday I came across some old newspaper cuttings. Here are some to do with St Marys winning the inter school swimming competition. Not sure of years. Can anyone help? They are not all the same year

Thank you to everyone who came to see the exhibition in the New School today and to see at first hand the fantastic facilities our children enjoy.

Thank you to Mr Nolan, Mrs Priestner and Mrs McNally for giving up their Sunday morning and keeping everyone supplied with tea, coffee and mince pies.

We've left the exhibition up for tomorrow morning so the children can see it.

We are lucky to live in such a lovely, friendly and caring community and it was nice to see some returning young faces.

Although I haven't yet covered all the printing costs, I am getting close so I intend to give Mr Nolan £100 next week to distribute to families in need before Christmas as I think this is when it will be most needed. More will follow when I've cleared the printing costs so... if anyone is short of a stocking filler you know where to find one .

Remember this is a one off print run - and will not be done again.

Pictures to follow

Given England's recent win in the T20 world cup, it seemed a good time to post about the Scarisbrick Hall Cricket team.

Players Listed in Ormskirk Advertiser, May – June 1905
J R Smith, J Bond, W C Wilford, J Valiant, James Charnock, J Forshaw, B H Holman, H C Orritt, J Harrison, W Dobson, W Dobson, J Davies, E Ashcroft, T A Brook.

The Scarisbrick Hall eleven wound up a most successful. Of the 19 matches arranged eight were won, four lost, five drawn and two abandoned. One of the latter was with Norley Hall and was abandoned on account of failure in the midst of holiday season to raise a team. The other was an evening fixture with the Southport Follies, rain preventing a start. The five drawn games were directly due to the prolonged stay of the Hall team at the wickets. During the season they have put together 1252 for the loss of 147 wickets as compared with their opponents compilation of 806 for 145 – a majority of 456 runs.
By virtue of the Captain’s (Mr J Forshaw) good fortune with the toss, the team had generally the choice of innings which in most cases was made good use of. The one blot on the season’s cricket was the disastrous defeat sustained at the hands of Southport YMCA during the holiday season. Messrs Davis, Smith and Harrison have proved themselves reliable batsmen. The attack has generally been very good. Smith and Valiant usually shared the bowling, which was backed up by excellent work in the field. Of the 145 wickets that fell 52 were captured by Smith and 48 by Valiant. About half of these were the result of fieldwork. Valiant headed the list with 9 catches followed by Charnock with 8. The umpires (Messrs E Heaton and J Hurst) have again officiated and Mr L Bond has been scorer.
The ground which is lent by the kindness of the Marquis de Casteja, has been well kept, and the team have shown their appreciation of the same by winning every match played on it except 2, which were creditable draws. Mr H Holman and Mr T Wolfendale have given the team their hearty and practical support. The club have also to thank their numerous vice presidents for their welcome assistance. It is to be hoped that the strong eleven which have now played themselves together may be available another year.

Recently, as part of my research into the Pugin and Hardman families, both of whom contributed to St Elizabeths, I visited the Convent of Mercy on the outskirts of Birmingham.

While I was there I picked up this prayer by their foundress which I find very moving - just thinking about the words we are God's " for time and eternity" stops me in my tracks

I wanted to share it with you
