It comes from the early Church and has particularly been championed by the Orthodox Church. My own background is, as you probably know, Protestant, Charismatic, Pentecostal and evangelical, but I have found this wonderfully simple prayer a beautiful way to meet with God. Honestly I don't really identify with any of these labels! By God's grace I am a disciple of Jesus and the Father has made me, in Christ, his son.
Anyway, early one morning, I went down to the beach and harbour in Scarborough at sunrise and spent 58 minutes walking and praying the Jesus Prayer.
Nothing artificial here, You'll hear the sea, the gulls and Scarborough quietly coming to life in the background. It was a beautiful morning as the sun appeared over the harbour.
You can leave it playing in the background, or actively join in, out loud or silently, as I lead the prayer. One person has already commented on how it helped them get their first night's sleep since last May - Praise God!
If you've never prayed the Jesus Prayer before, 58 minutes may be far too much! In which case, try 10 or 20 minutes to begin with. Over time, perhaps it could become part of your daily prayer. Of course no problem if you are just leaving it on to fall asleep to!
It's not for everyone, but for those who persist in the discipline, it can become a beautiful way simply to be with Jesus.
Please let me know how you get on
