St Martin's Church, Scarborough

St Martin's Church, Scarborough This page is run by the friends of St Martin's who formed in 2013. We contribute to the preservation Scarborough's hidden Pre-Raphaelite gem.

The church of St Martin-on-the-Hill opened in 1863. It was designed by the architect George Frederick Bodley and much of the decoration and stained glass was completed by William Morris and Co, which highlights some of the earliest work completed by this firm.

On Sunday we had the great delight of commissioning Amir Yates as a Community Minister for the Parish. Community Ministers are trained on the Mustard Seed, Diocese of York program to equip them to take on responsibility for outreach in their church. In this role Amir, along with our other Community Ministers, will be exploring how we continue to focus on 'reaching people we currently don't' as a church. Please keep him in your prayers as he begins this new ministry.

“Sit ye here, while I shall pray” Mark 14:32

At the end of the Mass on Maundy Thursday the Blessed Sacrament is processed to an Altar of Repose, which is dressed to symbolise the Garden of Gethsemane. Here we are invited to meditate upon the agony that Jesus suffered in the time before he willingly entered into his passion.

The church is all set for the Liturgy of Maundy Thursday - 7:30pm this evening.
