Tuesday 8th September is Accession Day, the fourth anniversary of the death of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and thus the day on which His Majesty The King acceded to the throne.

We will mark the day in St Clement’s at 5:30pm with Holy Communion (according to the Book of Common Prayer) with the traditional prayers for Accession Day. All are welcome to join us in praying for our King, Her Late Majesty, and the nation.

‘To be a pilgrim!’ This afternoon Churches Together in Sandwich tried something new - a pilgrimage in our own ancient town!

We set off from the United Reformed Church with a hymn, paused to sing again in St Peter’s Gardens, then on to sing in St Bart’s Chapel, St Andrew’s RC Church, and finally in St Clement’s Parish Church where we shared refreshments.

In all some 70 people (and four wonderful dogs!) gathered to meet new and old friends, to celebrate our town, and to pray for one another in an informal but special way.

Sandwich - you have been well and truly prayed for today!

🚨 PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT - please help if you can 🚨

Very sadly a number of churches in our local Deanery have experienced break-ins over the last week.

We are determined to keep St Clement’s open for the many visitors we receive each day.

Nevertheless, some valuables have been temporarily relocated for safekeeping. CCTV operates in St Clement’s, and the Vestry is alarmed.

🔔🚓 At this time especially, may we please ask the people of Sandwich to be vigilant along with us? The more people who walk around St Clement’s, the less attractive it is to criminals. Could a walk near St Clement’s be part of your routine this week?

Every person who walks beside and within St Clement’s deters those who would target us. Why not come and spend some time quietly, or walk around the building for an hour with our free audio tour (available on your phone!)?🚨

We’re committed to staying open daily for our town, and its visitors. We pray for all churches affected recently, for our security, and for the poor criminals who hate themselves and others enough to stoop to such activities. May they know love.

At Holy Communion the Rector directed the congregation’s attention to our newly-restored misericord. After four years, finally it has been possible to engage suitable contractors to restore this fifteenth-century treasure.

At the time, services involved long periods of standing and these seats could be folded up to allow the congregation to perch. Often carved intricately on the underside, the investigation is now starting into whose coat of arms this might be. They are known as ‘misericords’ meaning ‘mercy seats’.

The Rector also called to mind the soul of Dolly Parton, the American Country singer who died yesterday. Though her faith was expressed, in some ways, quite differently from the forms of Christianity we know in Sandwich, we can all recognise her enormous joy and hope in the Resurrection. In the comments you can find her song ‘He’s Alive’ - a joyful expression of faith from the perspective of an initially desperately despondent St Peter on Easter morning. It was this faith that led to Dolly Parton’s extraordinary charitable work - giving away more than 300 million books to children, and many, many millions of dollars to other causes, including finding a vaccine for COVID-19.

For two millennia the Christian faith has inspired people across innumerable cultures - whether commissioning a misericord and chanting Psalms solemnly, or curing diseases and singing uproariously. Today it continues to inspire us in Sandwich in so many different ways.

A good time was had by all on a parish outing to Blue Mermaid this afternoon, docked in Sandwich for this week with lots of information on display about the history of Thames barges, and the excellent work they do today especially with young people. This was followed by coffee in The Bell.

Blue Mermaid remains open for free visits at advertised times - thank you to all who have made her visit to Sandwich possible.

☕️The whole of Sandwich is buzzing - St Clement’s has a brand new, very shiny golden tea trolley! 🌟

Modelled here by Mo and Rhys, every Sunday the best coffee and tea in Sandwich are available after the 10:30am service as people catch up with friends, greet visitors and new worshippers, discuss the sermon, and spend time together.

The High Altar is the physical place of Communion, the sacramental way in which we are united as brothers and sisters in Christ, and coffee is served nearby as we echo this new, spiritual relationship across all our time together.

Two sugars in mine, please! 🍚
