May the monthly roundup begin 🌞

What a cracking month May turned out to be! We opened our Joyful Noise art exhibition, our peregrine chicks were ringed on the tower, and our new cutting garden was blessed. We also saw members from Great Wishford return for their annual Oak Apple Day tradition, and welcomed All Saints' Episcopal Church for an informal lunchtime concert.

We have an exciting month of June coming up, so stay tuned for a busy summer filled with joyful noise.

Does lightning ever strike twice? ⚡These spectacular photos were taken last week during a lightning storm, and thankfully the Cathedral wasn’t hit! But did you know our Cathedral has survived several recorded lightning strikes throughout its 800-year history?

It is recorded that the spire was set alight by lightning in 1431, 1641, and again in 1741. In 1559, a lightning strike tore a hole in the spire 60 feet from the top.

The lightning strike in 1741 set the spire ablaze and took nearly two hours to extinguish, narrowly avoiding disaster. The damaged timbers and braces were swiftly repaired and strengthened. A quote from former Clerk of Works Francis Price explains

"...had it continued half an hour longer, all the assistance on earth could not have prevented the total destruction of this pile."

Today, while such an event is incredibly unlikely, we remain prepared. Modern lightning conductors and advanced fire detection systems now protect the spire and tower.

Thanks to Danny Sullivan for sharing these great photos!

Happy ! 🌟

Here at Salisbury Cathedral, we are constantly blown away by the incredible work of our volunteers. Their kindness and dedication can be found in every corner of the Cathedral, whether that's greeting visitors, working with our education team, keeping the Cathedral dust-free, or supporting our worship and chaplaincy; there are so many roles that volunteers play in shaping the life of this extraordinary place.

To our amazing community of volunteers, thank you for all the work you do. We couldn't be more grateful!

Grovely! Grovely! Grovely! 🌳

It was a pleasure to welcome back members of Great Wishford (a small village near Salisbury) as they exercised their ancient right to collect wood from Grovely Wood. This day is known as Oak Apple Day, and dates back to the 12th century, but the specific date was chosen to commemorate the restoration of King Charles II to the throne in 1660, and the charter rights were confirmed by the Royal Forest of Grovely’s Forest Court.

Since then, the tradition goes that a group of residents wakes the whole village at dawn, and once every light is on, they move on to Grovely Wood to exercise their ancient right to pick wood. From there, they head to the Mother Church, Salisbury Cathedral, led by four women in costume, where they dance to two songs before continuing inside to the altar to renew and maintain the charter for another year.

It's time to name our four chicks! 🐣🐣🐣🐣

Some of you may have noticed our cameras were down briefly this morning as our chicks were ringed by our partners from the British Trust for Ornithology. We can now announce that we have 2 females and 2 males, and we need your help to name them!

As we celebrate our year of Joyful Noise, with free outdoor concerts, fascinating talks, and our new art exhibition, we'd love to hear your ideas for names that reflect the Joyful Noise theme. The more creative, the better!

What do you see in this pillar? 🐖

Have you ever noticed this mark on one of the pillars on our west front? This mark, which looks to some like a pink pig, isn't graffiti. It's actually a natural discolouration of the stone!

The calcite veins in Ashburton Marble cause these contrasting patterns, so it is not uncommon to see this, but perhaps not many that resemble animals. The column was installed during the repairs to the west front, carried out by George Peter White, who was contracted to do the work in 1866.

Let us know what you see, and if you can find the pillar next time you're here!

Another year for 🌱

Each year, we take part in the Salisbury-based charity Plantlife's movement, . Throughout May, we stop mowing all of our grassy areas in the Close, allowing pollinators to do their thing and help rebuild the biodiversity of our green spaces. This also helps tackle the pollution and also helps reduce urban heat extremes, so it's a win-win!
