A week has passed since the dedication and consecration of our new altar, and we're pleased to share with you some photos from what was a blessed day of celebration, along with a snippet of our Cathedral Choir's beautiful performance from the day.

The sun was shining on Salford Cathedral today as hundreds gathered for the Solemn Mass of Dedication of the Altar, celebrated by Bishop John alongside Bishops of England and Wales including the Archbishop of Liverpool, Cardinal Archbishop Emeritus of Westminster and clergy of our diocese.

The service ended with a blessing from our special guest His Excellency Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, on behalf of Pope Leo XIV.

We give thanks to those that joined us on this important occasion including representatives from our parishes as well as members of our clergy.

Thanks, too, to our wonderful Cathedral Choir, whose voices filled the cathedral with the grace of divine worship and who showcased two specially commissioned pieces.

Tomorrow we will mark a sacred occasion for our Cathedral as we gather for the Solemn Mass of Dedication of the Altar - an ancient rite which sets apart the altar for divine worship, to be celebrated by Bishop John.

The Mass is by invitation only, with each parish having been invited to send representatives, but it will be livestreamed from 12pm on the Cathedral Website - www.salfordcathedral.co.uk

We are open!

Thank you to all those who attended our first Mass this morning and to all the visitors who have been coming in during the day.

In the first homily in our reopened Cathedral, Canon Michael reminded us that "Where there is a common purpose, great things can be achieved." Fr Michael also took the time to thank all the hundreds of people who had worked on or supported the project. He went on to say:

This weekend is not the end of our journey, but the beginning of a mission the Lord has bestowed on us as a Cathedral parish and as the Mother Church. If we take the lessons from the project, to listen and learn from one another, together we can build the Kingdom of God and be a beacon of light.

Yes, we now have a beautiful space, but the purpose of the project was to create a place of worship from which we can go and be in Christ in our world. Then, we will see the mission of the project in action.

As we approach the reopening of our cathedral this weekend, we take a moment to extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed their skill, craftsmanship, and dedication to this once-in-a-generation project for our diocese.

We are especially grateful to our main contractors and architects Simpsons of York and Purcell Architecture.

From stonemasons and carpenters to decorators and skilled tradespeople, the detail of this restoration reflects your care, expertise, and commitment to excellence.

After three years of careful restoration, refurbishment, and renewal, we are delighted to share these final images ahead of our Cathedral's reopening.

For more than 175 years, Salford Cathedral has stood at the heart of our diocesan community. These photographs offer a first look at the transformed interior before we welcome people back through its doors in early July.

We look forward to sharing this next chapter with you.
