"This story is not quite what we were expecting! Deborah, a prophet, is introduced, who summons...a military man.., into action against...the oppressor; but it is Jael, the wife of a mercenary blacksmith, who kills him and brings the oppression to an end.” Janet Tollington looks at Deborah and Jael in today’s Daily Devotion.

Pray with us today.

Loving God, We give you thanks for those early Methodists who, “obsessed with salvation” and Spirit-filled, felt compelled to share with others the message of your transforming love and to demonstrate this good news in practical ways to the poor and needy. Lives were transformed as thousands believed.

Speak to us again, we pray; inspire us afresh, that members of congregations in the Methodist Church in Ireland may once again be compelled by the love of Christ to share the good news throughout the island of Ireland. Equip us by the power of the Spirit that we may not only be involved in practical and charitable action, but also be able to speak of the transforming love we have experienced. Amen.

Elaine Barnett, Lay Leader of the Conference, Methodist Church in Ireland

Pray with us today.

We pray for people around the world

Oh Bethlehem, house of bread, under your skies the angels sang their song and in your humble surroundings the Creator’s life on earth began.

Oh Bethlehem’s child, Prince of Peace, fill the world, we pray, with a hunger for justice that deep and lasting peace may come to the land of your birth.

Oh Jerusalem, city of God, Outside these walls your divine hands were pierced, eternity held its breath as you were laid to rest in a borrowed tomb.

Oh Jerusalem, witness to your Resurrection,

we pray that new life may triumph over destruction, fear, violence, oppression and death, and radiate from these streets to the whole world.

In the name of the incarnate, crucified and risen God, Amen.

David Hardman, Methodist Liaison Officer, Jerusalem

"The stories...portray the kind of tribal skirmishes that arise when peoples seek a permanent homeland for themselves and come into contact with others who are already resident, or have aspirations to control the same territory themselves.” Janet Tollington muses on links with the stories in Judges and contemporary realities in today’s Daily Devotion.
