St Stephen's with St Julian's Church, St Albans

St Stephen's with St Julian's Church, St Albans A Church of England parish consisting of two churches serving the Chiswell Green, St Stephen, Verulam, Cottonmill and Sopwell parts of St Albans

St Stephen's is a parish church founded in 948AD. The building that is here today is mainly medieval but was restored from a near ruinous condition in the 1860s. The spire on the tower dates from this time. The pews and ornamental woodwork are Victorian. The pulpit and canopy date from 1936. The lectern is a copy of the Dunkeld Lectern which was removed from St Stephen's and is now on loan to the

Museum of Scotland. Attached to the church is the hall, kitchen and meeting room which is available for hire. The church is surrounded by a very tranquil churchyard and Garden of Remembrance. St Stephen's churchyard is the only graveyard in St Albans which is open for the burial of its parishioners. St Julian's Church, the daughter church of St Stephen's started life in 1952. It was originally in a wartime Nissen hut which had stood in fields as part of an anti aircraft searchlight emplacement. It was founded to support the Cottonmill housing development which was being built around it. The current building dates from 1956 and was partly paid for by individual community subscriptions of 6d (just over 2p). Both churches form an integral part of the community and have hall facilities available for hire. The Vicar of the parish is Revd Becky Leach.
