Across the Diocese of St Albans, we want to say thank you for all that you are doing to make our churches safer places.

Safeguarding is not just about policies and procedures. It’s about people. It’s about listening well, responding with care, and creating environments where everyone feels safe, heard and supported.

Safeguarding is a shared responsibility, and we are grateful for the care and commitment shown across our churches, schools and chaplaincies.

Leaders and volunteers from across the Diocese came together for our Hope for Rural Churches Conference last weekend, for a day packed with inspiration, practical support and shared wisdom for ministry in rural communities.

From keynote speaker Revd Canon Sally Gaze, to hands-on seminars and great conversations, it was wonderful to see so much passion and creativity throughout the day.

We’re so encouraged by all that God is doing in our rural churches. Please keep praying for those returning to serve their communities with fresh vision and renewed purpose. 🙏

The Rt Revd Dr Andrew Rumsey has formally become Bishop of St Albans, following the Confirmation of his Election yesterday at St Mary-le-Bow in the City of London.

When his appointment was announced earlier this year, Bishop Andrew described his return as “a homecoming”, reflecting on his roots in the Diocese where he was born and baptised.

The Confirmation of Election now enables him to take up the legal responsibilities of the role. Bishop Andrew will move to St Albans and begin his ministry in the Diocese later this year. Further steps will follow, including paying Homage to His Majesty the King and his installation at St Albans Cathedral on Saturday 19 September. Arrangements for tickets will be announced soon.

More than 30 families gathered at Rectory Lane Cemetery for a lively Great Big Nature Hunt as part of Churches Count on Nature Week over the weekend. From pond dipping to bug hunting, children and adults discovered the rich wildlife thriving in this carefully restored green space.

Kate Campbell from Rectory Lane Cemetery, the churchyard of St Peter's Church, Berkhamsted, shared: “It was about helping people notice what is already here and feel a sense of shared care for it. Seeing families exploring, learning and enjoying the space together was just wonderful.”

This week (6–14 June) is both Churches Count on Nature and the Great Big Green Week 2026 💚. It’s a celebration of nature and of God’s creation, with activities and nature counts taking place across the Diocese. We’ll be featuring a news story with photographs of these counts and projects, so do send yours to us: [email protected].

👉 To start us off, we are sharing the story of a church who have embraced the outdoors and are exploring faith in nature through their forest church services, which began last autumn. Hear from the Revd Maxine Howarth, vicar of St Mark's Church Hitchin, who shares what this looks like for them in practice: https://www.stalbansdiocese.org/news/forest-church-exploring-faith-in-nature/

💻 Caring for God's Acre are hosting webinars each lunchtime this week, including how to engage children with the history and biodiversity in churchyards, making our churchyards a home for butterflies and the role of urban churchyards. Today is World Environment Day 🌍

This year’s theme, Climate Action, invites us to reflect on how we care for God’s creation. As we see changes in our environment, each of us can play a part in protecting and restoring the world around us.

As a diocese, we are reflecting together on our emissions and taking practical steps to care for creation together.

⏰ A quick reminder that the Energy Footprint Tool (EFT) is open in the Parish Returns Portal until Tuesday 30 June 2026. The EFT is a Church of England online platform that allows parishes to calculate their building's carbon footprint and energy efficiency: https://www.churchofengland.org/about/environment-and-climate-change/energy-footprint-tool

Your input helps us better understand our impact and where we can act next.

The Collect for Trinity Sunday:

Holy God,
faithful and unchanging: enlarge our minds
with the knowledge of your truth,
and draw us more deeply
into the mystery of your love,
that we may truly worship you,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen
