St Albans Cathedral

St Albans Cathedral St Albans Cathedral stands over the place where Alban, Britain's first saint, was buried after giving his life for what he believed in.
(1435)

Today the Cathedral continues to welcome pilgrims and visitors as a place of peace and historical interest, while also running a lively events programme and still serving as a parish church for the local community. For further details on our long, fascinating history, visiting information, or current events, please visit the website. Entry to the Cathedral is free of charge.

This week, we’ve been celebrating Volunteers’ Week and we couldn’t be more grateful for the incredible community of nearly 600 volunteers who give their time, energy and care to St Albans Cathedral.

From welcomers and guides to gardeners, stewards and behind-the-scenes helpers, our volunteers play a vital role in everything we do. This week we were delighted to honour them at a special Volunteer Evensong, followed by a wonderful tea party today, a small celebration of the huge impact they make every single day.

Thank you to every one of our volunteers for your generosity, dedication and warmth. The Cathedral simply wouldn’t be the same without you. 💛

🌍 World Environment Day at St Albans Cathedral 🌿

This World Environment Day, we celebrate our shared responsibility to care for God’s creation, something that lies at the very heart of our mission at St Albans Cathedral.

We have committed to an ambitious journey towards becoming Carbon Net Zero by 2030, with our energy already coming from 100% renewable sources and a comprehensive decarbonisation strategy underway across all our buildings and estates.

From enhancing biodiversity in our Cathedral grounds to promoting sustainable travel, reducing energy use, and hosting events that inspire environmental action, caring for creation is woven into everything we do.

We are proud to have been awarded the A Rocha UK Silver Eco Church Award, recognising this work and we are now actively working towards the Gold Award, striving to go even further in protecting and restoring the natural world.

As part of the global Eco Church movement led by A Rocha, we join thousands of churches committed to practical action across worship, buildings, land, community engagement and lifestyle, all in response to the urgent climate and nature crisis.

This World Environment Day, we invite you to join us:
💚 Reflect on how we can care for creation in our daily lives
💚 Support local and global environmental action
💚 Be part of a hopeful, sustainable future

Together, we can make a difference, for our community, our planet, and generations to come.

The oldest medieval music manuscript of its kind in England has now been reclaimed as a product of St Albans.

Read a short article by Dr Thomas Phillips (University of Cambridge), whose research explores the manuscript and its origins, and who will lead a talk on it here, Friday 12th June: https://bit.ly/4aaMF1I

But remember; the evening is more than just a talk. The music preserved in the manuscript will be brought to life in performance, with chants heard once again in the Cathedral for which they were written over 800 years ago, under the direction of Andrew Carwood, Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral.

For the first time in nearly 800 years, music from a medieval manuscript will return to St Albans Cathedral and be heard in the very space for which it was created - for one evening only.

Monastic chants from this remarkable manuscript, produced in the abbey’s own scriptorium, will once again fill the cathedral in a rare live performance.

Renowned Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral, Andrew Carwood MBE brings the extraordinary sounds of the medieval monastery back to life.

The performance will be introduced by Dr Thomas Phillips (University of Cambridge), whose research opens a window onto the musical, intellectual and devotional life of St Albans Abbey at the height of its influence as one of medieval England’s great monastic centres.

Music written here, performed here, and now returned… for the first time in almost eight centuries. And you can be one of the first to hear it: https://www.stalbanscathedral.org/Event/the-st-albans-processional-music-and-scribal-culture-at-twelfth-century-st-albans

Join us for our Alban Devotion with Fr Will Gibbs, shared from inside the private prayer chapel, as we reflect on Corpus Christi - the Feast of the Body of Christ - giving thanks for the institution of the Eucharist, when Jesus gathered with his friends, took bread and wine, blessed and shared them as a lasting way of remembering him and being present to them. In that same spirit of coming together and community, we mark Volunteers’ Appreciation Week, honouring the 580 volunteers whose dedication keeps this special space open; this Saturday we’ll gather them over tea and cake, a small but heartfelt way of showing our immense gratitude.

On Thursday the Church celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi which means 'Body of Christ'. On this day we give thanks for the institution of the Eucharist as we recall Jesus gathering with his friends and taking the bread and wine, blessing them and sharing them as a lasting way of remembering him and being present to them. We celebrate this important gift to the Church in which Jesus continues to be present to his followers with a special Eucharist on Thursday at 5pm in the Cathedral to which all are welcome.
