We are looking forward to welcoming Colin Wiggins, former Curator and Head of Education from the National Gallery to St Mary's on Saturday 20th June.
Join us what promises to be a fascinating and engaging talk from Colin on the saints in art, both then and now. There will be a bar with drinks at very good prices, and even a raffle - what's not to love?!
From the medieval period onwards the cult of saints took on great importance, with the faithful praying for miraculous intercessions from favourite saints. Pray to Saint Margaret, for example, if you were about to give birth or to Saint Lucy if you were having problems with your eyes. Or if you were suffering from toothache, an invocation to Saint Apollonia might well do the trick.
Figures such as Francis or Dominic were real historical figures who had a major influence on European history but how many of these other saints actually existed? We all know about George and his dragon or Catherine and her wheel but where do these fanciful tales come from? This talk will focus upon the fascinating stories of the saints and show how they have been depicted by some of the greatest artists of the past, such as Titian, Caravaggio and Rembrandt.
