Isle of Wight Catholic History Society

Isle of Wight Catholic History Society Promoting the Catholic heritage of the Isle of Wight Welcome to the Facebook of the Isle of Wight Catholic History Society.

The society was established in October, 2001, with the approval and the blessing of His Lordship Bishop Crispian Hollis of Portsmouth. The society seeks to raise awareness of the Catholic history of the Island and welcomes contributions from anyone who can assist with this objective. The patron of the society is Bishop Declan Lang of Clifton, a former Vicar- General of the Portsmouth Diocese, and

a native of Cowes, who is familiar with the Catholic history of the Island. There are nine Catholic churches on the Island; - Ryde, Bembridge, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Cowes, East Cowes, Newport and Totland. There are two Benedictine abbeys - both in Ryde. There is a Catholic secondary school at Newport; and five Catholic Primary schools, - Ryde, Ventnor, Carisbrooke, Totland and East Cowes. Our society is keen to promote the history of our Catholic churches, you will find relevant information on the various pages of this website www.iow-chs.org

St. Mary's Church crypt beneath St. Mary's Church in Ryde High Street. One of the few church crypts that's open to the public. Originally, a chapel dedicated to St. Peter, there is now a pictorial history of Catholicism on the Island, which can be viewed around the walls. Why not call in for a tea or coffee on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday mornings?

See this beautiful, ornate Victorian family chapel. It's at Totland Bay on the west of the Island. Built by the Ward family (contemporaries of Newman at time of Oxford Movement) in 1871 and dedicated as St. Saviour's, it served as the parish church for West Wight until 1923. Today, sadly, it is redundant with only very occasional Masses.
Although in need of some restoration, it remains one of the finest Victorian, Catholic family chapels in England.
If you're at Totland Bay anytime, why not call in and take a look?

This Sunday, 25th March marks the anniversary of the birth of Elizabeth, Countess of Clare, in 1793. A convert, received into the Church in St. Peter's, Rome in 1841, she built St. Mary's Church in Ryde High Street in 1846 and the Dominican Priory at Carisbrooke in 1866.
We give thanks for a generous benefactress.

Today Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth asks people to observe silence in church, particularly before Mass. He encourages us to avoid "chit chat" and instead to open our hearts and speak to God. Thus, we prepare ourselves for Mass.
