Yesterday we had a visit from Studio B. a. d, a group of architects that look at and work on community projects. They had been asked by the diocese to look at the church and along with some of the community, look at possible uses. The good news is we have a unique space with outside areas that could be utilised. The bad news is they are looking at several churches in Ryde and Newport. It is very early days and nothing may come of it but the interest shown from the community with the announcement about the meeting has shown us that this wonderful building is still worth fighting for.
We were asked to give suggestions of things we would like to see while keeping the integrity of the church and I was able to pass on all the surveys that were filled out by the community.
St Michael is an amazing building with so much to offer.
This beautiful building was given to the community by families who lived in our community. It was a sanctuary for our community through 2 world wars and has been at the start and end of so many lives within that community. However communities change and so do their needs but the one thing that never alters is a person's need to belong. We are not solitary by nature and having places to come together is vital for our well being. Unfortunately St Michael's has been let down partly by those in charge but also a fast moving and every changing world. The recent pandemic has made us re-evaluate and realise we do need each other and St Michael's is ready to open it's doors once again to it's community.
St Michael is an amazing building with so much to offer and I will look forward to future developments and hopefully be involved in any future discussions. Thank you to all those who have responded and watch this space.

I have not as yet had a reply to my email from the diocese. However work has begun on the roof.
Yesterday this notice was placed on the wray st church door.
The hall entrance from St Michaels is also,it would appear, locked from the inside. If any groups had belongings in there I am afraid you will not be able to retrieve them. I will keep people informed if I hear any more.

I felt more optimistic and happy at the end of 2018 than at the start of 2019 l have to say.
On 8th January I received an email from the diocese informing that the church is to remain closed. I have copied the relevant parts. I have also copied my response.
I feel let down and saddened that despite finding solutions to every obstacle put to me, they continue to find new ones and obviously have their own plans for the future which don't involve us.
I am sorry I have failed to achieve a satisfactory conclusion and hope there are others who may have new ideas on how to move forward.

from the diocese

"As you know there is no money to deal with the currently know issues with the electrics let alone what might be discovered, so having discussed the issues the church needs to remain closed for the moment "

" It is a great pity that historical issues have led us to this point but with limited funds, no congregation and the H&S safety issues that have been raised, the senior staff have decided there is no option at the moment but to just pause and discern how we move forward."

My response

I am hugely disappointed with the attitude of the church of England and our local diocese in regards to this matter. I have done everything they have asked, found answers to problems and reconnected with the churches community. People are disillusioned with the church and what it stands for. This was an opportunity to turn that around and show us the church is wanting to reconnect but in a different way. I am sure we could sort the hall and fundraise for the insurance and the electrics but the diocese are not allowing us to even try.I am beginning to believe the more cynical amongst us who believe it is a done deal and money is all that matters. I have been careful to keep personalities out of the fight but sadly the response from the diocese has just deepened my belief that many of those who profess to be caring and wanting to embrace the flock are in fact led by money and not the true nature of Christianity. My own experience and reports of how others have been treated has only expanded this. Lies were told and facts hidden and that is hard to fight. For nearly two years no one has bothered with our community. No proper services were offered to those who may have wished to participate. Many feel totally isolated. Yes there are other churches near but many if those in need of somewhere are unable to get there with no local bus services.
There are huge problems with our young as there is nowhere for them to go and empty halls standing idle is terrible. We were happy to fundraise to raise the insurance but were told no. We could raise funds to do the hall and possibly the electrics but everytime we find solutions or get offers of support a new problem is found making me feel that the diocese have known all along what the outcome was going to be and that disappoints me. I do not feel my time has been wasted as I have met many wonderful people and have been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of so many people, people who demonstrate christian values and dont just preach it . They offer their services and support quietly and unassumingly in the true spirit of christianity. The church of St Michaels does exsist and does have a congregation but they have never had the chance to grow due to mistakes and poor leadership. I have been defensive of those in power to the radio and paper believing we could work together to rebuild our church to benefit our community unlike many others. I have asked people to be patient and let us ork with the diocese but maybe I was wrong. I am relieved the church roof is to be repaired but while watertight other parts will deteriorate and soon it will be another forgotten gem.
We will continue to look for ways to help our community but sadly without the church's support
I will always be willing to work with the diocese if by a miracle they find a solution but as that is unlikely unless we can match any amounts offered by contractors to squeeze more houses into the area, I will look on sadly as the buildings decay.

Thank you to all those who have supported us. Thank you to the businesses who have offered help and support. I will continue to update if we find other ways to move forward.

I will be opening the church tomorrow and Sunday 10.00 -5.00 for the last time this year.
I am hopeful this will not be the end of the story but for now the public liability insurance will end on 31st.
Please keep looking out for updates in the new year.
Thank you and have a peaceful and happy new year.

The church is open all day today. Thank you to all those who have visited. I will open again on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th for the last time as so many people have paid us a visit recently. Thank you to all those who have supported us since our struggles began in July to keep this lovely building open. I have met some truly wonderful people and if nothing else the community has reconnected. This is not the end just a new beginning and although it may seem quiet over Christmas I am feeling positive that come the New year we will be able to explore other avenues to keep St Michaels at the heart of our community.
For nearly 2 years I have kept the doors open and I dont believe its rready to have them closed just yet!!
Thanks to those who have spent days quietly putting together documents and displays and have spent hours in the cold setting things up and delivering leaflets. It has been great getting to know you all.
Thank you to all those who have walked through the doors and attended our events because whatever the future holds for St Miichaels it will need our community to keep showing we care!!
Have a very Happy and peaceful Christmas and a peaceful New Year and please keep those prayers and positive thoughts coming and watch this space.
Love

I would like to thank all those who attended our community carols today despite the awful weather. It was with great sadness that I had to announce that after a meeting with the diocese yesterday, I recieved conformation this morning, that due to health and safety concerns following a survey of the church and hall, the public liability insurance will not be renewed and the church will be closed. They hope this will only be a pause in the life of the church but were not willing to allow us to continue holding events. It would appear the church has not had electrical surveys done for many years and work would probably need to be done. The roof will be repaired to keep the church watertight but this will take all the churches finances. The diocese will not fund work on a church with no purpose, no congregation and no pcc or clergy. We suggested trying to raise funds as a community but it was argued that the amounts needed would be too great. At this point in time I am not sure where we go from here. We have raised awareness of this beautiful building and reconnected with the local community. Anything we do now will be harder as the doors will be shut but hopefully this will not be the end and new avenues can be explored by the diocese and the community.
I will continue to open the doors until 24th December so please call in and see this lovely church that managed to stay open through two world wars. The bells will ring Christmas morning and for the last time. on Dec 30th. Thank you for your support and keep listening out for news.
