THE SMALL STABLE IN ST MARY’S
The figures in this stable scene were bought some 50 years ago, an Oxfam nativity set made in Peru, with unusual figures. In South America the visit of the three Magi is the main feature of a nativity scene. Here the Magi have been replaced by three caring neighbours coming with gifts for the baby and, no doubt, advice for the young mother. The llamas and the background are local, knitter Olive A and artist John H.
So, a different crib, 8000 miles from Bethlehem, in the Southern hemisphere, another family forced to move, taking makeshift shelter where they can , and, mercifully, finding the kindness of strangers.
This Mary, Joseph and babe symbolise refugees across our world today, refugees for whom we pray:
Almighty and merciful God,
whose Son became a refugee
with no place to call his own;
look with mercy on those who today
are fleeing from danger, homeless and hungry.
Bless those who work to bring them relief;
inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts;
and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
