Today is Ascension Day.

"I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
John 16:28

Ascension Day is one of the very earliest Christian festivals, already well established by the 3rd century.

It commemorates the Christian belief of the bodily Ascension of Jesus into Heaven.
Ascension Day marks the 40th day after Jesus's resurrection.

In the Bible, the Risen Christ appeared many times to his disciples. Then, 40 days after the resurrection, he took them to the Mount of Olives where they watched as he physically ascended into Heaven.

Christians affirm that Christ exists bodily in heaven, interceding for us
as our High Priest.

We can therefore approach God's throne with confidence in his grace and mercy.

Lord Jesus,
you became man
and came to live among us.
For love of us, you suffered and died for us.

Because you are God, you conquered death and rose on the third day.
Today you return to your Father and our Father, but you promised to remain with us until the end of time,
and to send us the Holy Spirit.

We rejoice and thank you, Lord Jesus.
Come Holy Spirit, purify and transform us,
kindle within us the fire of your love.
Amen.
