Key Learning: As children we found ways to protect ourselves from vulnerability, from being hurt, diminished, and disap-pointed. We put on armor; we used our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors as weapons; and we learned how to make ourselves scarce, even to disappear. Now as adults we realize that to live with courage, purpose, and connection-to be the people we long to be—we must again be vulnerable. The courage to be vulnerable means taking off the armor we use to protect ourselves, putting down the weapons that we use to keep people at a distance, showing up, and letting ourselves be seen.

The Fear of Being Found

Email 📧 from the social worker reminding Ann that they still need her counselling files.

Her husband Darryl asking if she had heard👂 back from anyone yet.

Her “Nope.” Response. When clearly she had, she had heard from Ted, the social worker requesting her counselling files once again. Yet why she chose to keep this from her husband? We will just get to wait and see.

She crawls into bed emotionally exhausted, but yet still reminding herself of the heroes of the Bible and what they went through during their waiting periods.

Darryl snuggles into her. And there they are, held and loved. But the question keeps coming. “Why are you so afraid?” (Mark 4:40).

“No question may matter more. Because if we let fears surge in the mind, they’ll turn the needles of the heart, if our lips never speak those fears out loud — the fears remain slippery, morph large in the dark, turning our hearts away from Love Himself.” Ann Voskamp

Recognizing Grace

What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short... for this world in its present form is passing away.
1 CORINTHIANS 7:29, 31

And there's a way to preach the way through to the soul:
Calm.
Haste makes waste.

Remember:
• Life is not an emergency. Life is brief and it is fleeting, but it is not an emergency.
• Emergencies are sudden, unexpected events-but is anything under the sun unexpected to God?
• Stay calm, fully enter into what is grace even in this moment, and give thanks.
• There is always a way to give thanks for at least something because an all-good, all-powerful God has all these things-all things-always under control.

And so I preach to myself to hold it mindfully, attentively... thankfully:
Life is not an emergency-but a gift.

Prayer 🙏❤️
Abba Father, with all the gifts I count, You are filling me, giving me more time to recognize the significance of the story You are writing on these days. Cause me to slow down today and truly taste of Your very real goodness, even here... especially in Yourself. In Jesus Name, Amen 🙏❤️

Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I live in the spacious, non-anxious presence of (Abba) God.

Not Condemned

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. “Life is waves.

And however this day, this next week, or the next few months, or the next few years unfold, there is going to be suffering that enfolds us all.

Because the reality of the trajectory of human life isn’t a straight lined of ascent, from strength to strength, climbing higher and higher, but like a repeating W, a dying and rising, a dying and rising, over and over again — the heights and peaks of the cresting waves — and then the depths and valleys of the falling waves.

Life is waves — and there is no controlling these waves. Grief comes in waves. Suffering comes in waves.

There is no controlling life’s storms, there is only learning to live with waves.

And the real work of being human is mastering how to process losses while being in the process of moving forward.

Losses are a given, but what you do with what’s still been given, is what will take you where you want to go.

Loss may be a four letter word — but it’s a word that you don’t read to understand, but rather one you feel in your gut and hold on to Jesus to keep standing.

In losses, we gain an understanding of who we really are.

In losses, we gain a vision of who we can still become.

Life, grief, suffering, losses it all comes in waves. But. BUT!

But we can get out of the boat, we can have faith to walk on waves, we can look up & see through the underbelly of storm clouds, to a shimmer of star, a shaft of light, that catches us like hope finding us again, & we can feel it warm on our heaven-turned faces.

Every darkened shadow of suffering is but a passing thing: there is always light and more light above this temporal storm.

*In Christ, we are all living in an ocean of light, so there is no grief, no suffering, no loss to ever fear.*

*There is light above this storm and no suffering can carry us away from the reach of His light.*

“Today, try this:
Interrupt all thought rumination with a thankfulness celebration.

Mentally circling something is the mind’s way of fooling itself that it’s controlling something, which it finds self-soothing. But: All the brooding in the world never hatches hope.

No soul is no hen or cow: no soul is meant to brood or ruminate.

You are not a ruminant, and you are never meant to ruminate. You are a celebrant, made to celebrate. Your soul doesn’t need cud to ruminate on; your soul needs (Abba) God to celebrate in.

All intrusive ruminations need a gratitude intervention.

Mind keeps circling that toxic situation? Immediately: Gratitude intervention.

Giving too much air time in your mind to a dark narrative? Immediately: Give thanks.

Instead of counting grievances, count gifts.
Counter that barrage of negative thoughts by counting gifts.

Gratitude interventions cure thought ruminations.

Being grateful isn’t being a naive pollyanna, it’s being neurally proactive. If you let your mind keep returning over and over to toxic, dark, knotting thoughts — you create a rut through your mind that keeps you going in pointless circles of pain.

Do the things you can do, deal with what you can, use your agency — and then refuse to make mental ruts by returning to the situation but instead choose daily gratitude interventions.

We definitely do not live in denial, and we definitely deal with situations, but we don’t fixate on situations, we fixate on grace — because we live in doxology.

Why be obsessed with certain thoughts — when you can be obsessed with the grace of (Abba) God?”
