Chapter Eleven
China 🇨🇳
Tiny hands clinging to her ayi's shirt, Shiloh Shalom Yu Xin, not yet two, is in less than the bottom third percentile for weight, her single ventricle, broken heart breaking her into the million crystals of light of a breaking wave, and my hands are wide-open to catch all this light. Maybe a broken heart makes you break into your own kind of light? She is tiny, but for me, for us, she has gravity and means a whole world to a bunch of us a world away. I can only wish Darryl, our children, were all here, hushed by the holy luminance that is her. But a mere forty-eight hours after our dossier had logged into the agency in China, we'd landed in the ER with Malakai, our fifth-born son, gaunt, pale, and startlingly weak, only to get slammed with the shock that our boy had a blood glucose reading of 34 mmol/L (612 mg/dL), a dying pancreas, and a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. The only way he'd survive is if we figured out how to become a 24/7 manual organ for him, be his pancreas, and inject him with the correct dosage of insulin every time he opened his mouth to eat—or he'd die. Our little old world wobbled on its axle. "There's no way we can both leave Malakai right now, as his pancreas is dying and his blood sugars and insulin levels are erratic, and we're just trying to figure out how to navigate this." Darryl's eyes read steady, surrendered. "God made a Red Sea Road. Go-bring Shiloh Shalom Yu Xin home." We likely should have figured out another way. We should have had a holy imagination for some way for our own newly diagnosed diabetic son to still be safe, then found a way for Darryl to fly to China, too, a way for our hearts to be grafted with Shiloh Shalom's together, instead of me flying alone.
He thought I was more than capable of flying to the other side of the world and bringing home a baby on my own. I thought he was more than kind to cover and juggle a million other things at home. As we tried to navigate how to travel to China, a healthier way would have been for me to say, "I need you," and for him to say, "I need to be with you," and for us both to realize how one little girl would need us both. We didn't know it then: What we all need most is to need. Need, dependence, reliance is what cultivates trust and deepens attachments that make us secure. This is the way of faith. We only know it now: Sometimes you don't know you've turned the wrong way till you're down that road a long way. And yet, especially then, don't doubt that the WayMaker makes wrong ways right. This is the work of a good and kind God.
Shiloh's already cradled and rocked to sleep in the arms of her ayi, when one of the civil affairs govern-ment officials motions that it's time for me to reach out and take Shiloh in arm, as they need us to stand right over here for a photo of mother and daughter together for the legal paperwork. "Yes, yes." I tentatively turn, reach out arms aching with the weight of the moment, and her ayi nods, too, and stretches out her arms and sleeping Shiloh Shalom Yu Xin's entrusted from one heart of love to another in her brave line of mothers. Shiloh stirs. Looks up at me, terrified, sees where she is-and where she isn't. Sweet baby wails. Ayekah? Hineni.
Mama is here, right here. I just keep whispering that, as the officials snap the picture, as they motion for me to come sign papers. And with a few inky lines, she becomes mine and I become hers.
If you're ever lost'll make your way through.
If your heart ever breaks in two-I'll give you
my own. If you're ever alone— I'll make a way to hold you. Because as long as there's a way for our hearts to stay close, everything's going to be okay. What all our brokenness needs is withness and witness, and He is here, right here, God whose very name is "God is with us!" I kiss her fingertips.

Day 20
If He Had Been Here…
Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." But when Jesus heard it he said, "This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was....
Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world." When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice,
"Lazarus, come out." The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
