This week the church building has been full of fun, laughter, sea shanties, and slime! Come to St Bede's at 10am to hear all about our Shipwrecked Holiday Club with an All Age Celebration.

At 6pm we are in church as we continue our journey through Luke and we reach chapter 20 and the final parable Jesus told his disciples.

It's a day of big emotions! Relief, joy, excitement, along with disappointment, anxiety, and worrying about next steps. We are praying for all the young people we know who got results today, as well as those who got their results last week.

Here's a prayer, written by a young person getting her results some time ago and shared by the The Church of England

Jesus,
Keep reminding me of the bigger picture over the next few weeks,
Keep me in your hands when all other hands disappear,
For I am convinced that neither entry requirements nor exam results, neither anticipation nor doubts, neither success nor failure, nor any expectations, neither last minute fears nor anxieties, nor anything else in life, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Please, don't let me forget it!
Amen

In case you need a reminder today ❤️

In the midst of juggling childcare, back-to-school checklists, managing big feelings on little sleep in the neverending heat, a house that looks like there's been a riot, and the curated Instagram version of the summer holidays? Take heart - God is in our ordinary days ❤️

Psalm 23 is one of the most well known bits in the Bible - it begins "The Lord is my shepherd..." Maybe you remember something about green pastures or still waters. Maybe because you've heard it at a funeral, or turned into a hymn or song - or even as the theme tune to 1990s sitcom The Vicar of Dibley!

You're invited to our 10am service this Sunday morning at St Bedes's School on Carlton Road. We're meeting as a whole church family, all ages together, and we have Psalm 23 themed sheets for children and young people as we look at this passage in the Bible together. What does it mean to say "The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing"?

We are so grateful to everyone who brought in items for Stripey Stork's hygiene packs! We had a thought-provoking evening hearing about child poverty in our area, and how people can help - the power of kindness.

Thank you to the Mothers' Union for inviting us to speak to their members last week at Holy Trinity Church, Redhill about the work of Stripey Stork. It was a real pleasure to share more about the support we provide to families across Surrey and Croydon, and the difference that community kindness makes every single day.

We were also so grateful to receive a wonderful collection of toiletries. Your generosity will help ensure families have access to everyday essentials that so many of us take for granted. For families facing financial hardship, toiletries are often one of the first things to be cut from the shopping list as money is needed for rent, bills and food. Donations like these help relieve some of that pressure.

Thank you to everyone who donated and made this collection possible. Your kindness will make a real difference to families across Surrey and Croydon.

This Sunday at 6pm, we will include prayers for healing as part of our service of Holy Communion.

In the evening services we have been working our way through the gospel of Luke. The passage that we have reached is in Luke 18, where Jesus stops to talk to the blind beggar who has been crying out to him and asks 'What do you want me to do for you?'

It's a passage that reveals Jesus' identity as the Messiah/Saviour promised by the prophets, now sent by God. It shows how Jesus is willing and able to meet the deepest spiritual needs of those who cry out to him in faith. He is able to restore sight to the blind - to those inwardly and outwardly blind.

This Sunday, after coming up to take the bread and the wine, there will be the opportunity to be anointed with oil for healing. You won't need to explain why you would like prayer, simply allow a member of the team to anoint you with the sign of the cross and have them say a short prayer over you. It's an opportunity to bring our whole self before God - body, mind and spirit - in the context of worship and to ask that he would meet us at our deepest point of need.

In James 5 we read these words: Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you ill? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.'

Come along on Sunday evening - whether troubled, joyful or ill - as we sing, pray and ask for God's healing and help. If you're not able to come, then please join me in praying that all who come for prayer will leave with a sense of having met with Jesus and been deepened in faith by that experience.

Your friend and Vicar,
Mick

The Vicar's tear-stained England shirt will have one more outing this season, as he wears it for our World Cup themed service on Sunday morning. World Cup glory may have slipped away from us again, but in Philippians 3 we're encouraged to 'press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called (us) heavenwards in Christ Jesus'. A far greater trophy and a far greater glory is still in view as we follow Jesus!

So, wear your football shirt or colours - whichever nation you want to celebrate - and make Sunday morning a colourful and joyful service! Why not invite along a football-mad friend so that they hear the good news about Jesus?

This Thursday at 8pm in church we are joined by Charlotte from the incredible Stripey Stork , who provide local families with a helping hand when they need it. Their packs for children of all ages from birth up to 18 always include hygiene items: shower gel, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner (for all hair types). We invite you to come and hear about the life-changing work of Stripey Stork and play your part by bringing along something for our collection of brand new unopened toiletries. Everyone welcome - bring a friend!
