Help Reimagine our St Barnabas Church site

https://www.readinggateway.church/st-barnabas-reordering-project/

Since 1966, our St Barnabas church site has been a home for worship and care in South Reading.

In 2025, a boiler failure forced our church to close. Worship continues in a small hall, but renewal is urgent. Even with the doors shut, our mission is alive: our Food Pantry supports 50+ families weekly; Parish Nursing offers care and companionship; partnerships with the council and local groups are growing.

We've already raised £159,000 through grants and generous personal giving. Help us raise the remaining funds needed to reopen St Barnabas as a seven-day community hub with flexible worship and meeting space, energy-efficient heating powered by solar and battery, restored heritage, improved accessibility, and room for essential community services to keep growing.

If the purpose fails or funds are surplus, grants will be returned; any balance will go to general funds.

With your help, warmth, connection and hope return to the heart of South Reading. If you would like to give to this project, please click on the following link https://www.stewardship.org.uk/pages/stbarnabasreorderingproject

Thank you John Sykes Foundation for your funding it will make so much difference to our community work

We are pleased to announce that we have awarded funding of £1,210 to Reading Gateway Church in Whitley for the purchase of a new heavy-duty gazebo to support their ongoing invaluable community outreach and engagement work.

For many years, Reading Gateway Church have used a gazebo as part of their community events and activities, creating welcoming spaces where local residents can come together, access support, and build connections. However, after more than a decade of regular use, the Church’s existing gazebo had become damaged and was no longer suitable for continued use.

The new gazebo will provide a durable, safe, and long-term replacement that is easier to transport and assemble, enabling the Church to continue hosting a wide range of events throughout the year. From community gatherings and outreach initiatives to family activities and local engagement events, the investment will help create accessible and inclusive opportunities for people across Reading.

We are proud to support organisations such as Reading Gateway Church that are making a positive difference at a grassroots level and helping to strengthen community connections. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of their work and the many ways this new equipment will support local residents in the years ahead.

Help Us Reimagine Our St Barnabas Church – A Community Hub for South Reading

“This is more than bricks and mortar, it’s about building hope in South Reading.”

Our St Barnabas Church has been at the heart of our community for decades. Today, we have a unique opportunity to bring it back to life not just as a place of worship, but as a vibrant, welcoming hub open seven days a week for everyone.

Even while our church building is closed:

We support 25+ local families each week through our Food Pantry
We host community groups and gatherings
We offer care, connection, and support through Parish Nursing
We continue weekly worship in our hall

Now, we’re ready to do more.

Our Vision
To transform St Barnabas into a flexible, modern, and sustainable space that:

Serves all ages—from young families to older residents
Supports community activities and social connections
Provides a spiritual home for a growing and diverse community
Meets environmental goals with energy-efficient upgrades

The Goal
We’re working towards a £280,000 transformation, and thanks to incredible support, we’ve already raised £146,000!

We now need £135,000 more to make this vision a reality.

Your support will help us:

Reopen the church building
Provide a warm, welcoming space for the community
Continue vital services like the Food Pantry
Create a sustainable future for St Barnabas

This isn’t just a refurbishment, it’s a revival of hope, connection, and community.

How you can help:

Donate whatever you can
