St Mark, Reading

St Mark, Reading St Mark is an open and welcoming congregation worshipping and ministering, situated on Cranbury Road, near Battle Hospital, in West Reading.

The Church of St Mark is an open and welcoming congregation, worshipping and ministering in the Battle area. It is situated on Cranbury Road, near Battle Hospital, a mile to the west of Reading town centre (no. 16, 17 and 33 buses stop nearby). We are now part of the united benefice of St Mark and All Saints Reading. The church was first founded in 1889 as a place of mission and outreach, and thi

s is very much our work today. We gather to celebrate a parish eucharist at 9.15am on Sunday mornings in our simple and beautiful Edwardian church. Everybody is welcome in our open and inclusive congregation. Our worship uses a relaxed and friendly, modern catholic style. Coffee and chat afterwards is an important social occasion both at St Mark and at All Saints, (whose main service is at 10.30am). We hope that young and old will find that our congregations are friendly and inclusive.

This Sunday the Bishop of Reading. Andrew Proud was with us. His sermon was about forgiveness. We were guided to several examples in the Bible where a person sought forgiveness from a debtor but then failed to forgive another who had wronged them. How often do we say sorry or acknowledged someone who has done wrong or wronged us and told us sorry
A very poignant truth but one which we probably are not aware of is that by counting the number of times you forgive someone you are perhaps only delaying revenge. He tasked us with forgiving each other from that day onward as we ask God to forgive us in our daily prayers.

Our focus today was about the deciplies asking Jesus to teach them how pray thus bringing about The Lord's Prayer as we know it today. Our thoughts were then directed to what we actually think about as we say the Lord's Prayer. Do we think about the meaning of each line as we pray or is it a quick speedy recital? Prayers are between you and God and sometimes a reminder that makes us think about what our habitual saying has become is a good thing.
