The Wave is a 2008 German film directed by Dennis Gansel, inspired by real events.
The story follows a high school teacher, Rainer Wenger, who is teaching a class about autocracy. When his students question whether a dictatorship like the N***s could ever happen again in modern Germany, he decides to run a social experiment to show them how easily people can be drawn into authoritarian systems.
He introduces strict discipline, unity, and group identity, calling the movement “The Wave.” What begins as a classroom exercise quickly grows beyond his control. The students become increasingly loyal, exclude outsiders, and even intimidate others who refuse to join. As the movement spreads through the school, it mirrors the dynamics of fascism and the kind of mass manipulation that enabled the Holocaust.
The film powerfully demonstrates how quickly democratic societies can slide toward authoritarianism when individuals surrender critical thinking in favor of belonging, power, and conformity.
