During Tottenham’s recent match, goalkeeper Antonín Kinský was substituted and walked from the pitch disappointed. For any player, being taken off the field is difficult. Footballers train, prepare, and give their all, yet sometimes the manager decides it is time for someone else to step in.
Moments like this remind us of an important spiritual truth. In football we may be substituted, overlooked, or replaced, but before God the real question is not how long we played, but how faithfully we served.
The Bible reminds us:
“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2
In the game of life, every one of us has been placed on the field for a season. Some appear to play longer than others, some receive more attention, but the Lord looks beyond the applause of the crowd. He sees the heart.
Scripture also warns us that our earthly opportunities will not last forever:
“The night cometh, when no man can work.” John 9:4
Just as a footballer never knows when the manager might call him to the bench, none of us know how long our time will be on the pitch of life. That is why the Gospel matters so much.
The good news is that through the Lord Jesus Christ, we can have forgiveness and new life:
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13
At Gospel Goal, we use the language and moments of football to point people to eternal truths. The crowd may cheer or criticise, managers may substitute, and seasons may end, but Christ offers a place in His eternal kingdom that can never be taken away.
Are you ready when your final whistle comes?
