Today we celebrate the birthday of Our Lady. She only appears in the Gospels a few times, and always with her Son, for she always points to Christ. Her role is perhaps more hidden, more in the background, but she is also a reminder that important things happen in the background, where perhaps few people see them.

In a monastery the monks usually have different roles. Our oldest monk, Dom Christopher, launders and irons the napkins for the refectory and also irons shirts, albs etc for the rest of us! If there were an ironing competition, he would easily gain first prize! Everything looks as though it has just come out of the packet!

Today we celebrate the Memoria of St Augustine of Hippo, one of the Latin doctors of the Church, whose writings have been influential right up to the present. He lived in the 4th century, born and brought up in Hippo, now in Algeria, where he became a Bishop. It took a while to get to that point. He dabbled in various pagan philosophies, had a lover and 2 illegitimate sons, before his mother’s prayers were answered and under the influence of St Ambrose of Milan, he finally became a Catholic Christian.
He is perhaps best known for his Confessions, which tell something of his life, of his love of God (they are much more tame than you might expect from the title), but he also wrote commentaries on Scripture, lots of letters, and a Rule for nuns, which was also followed by his clergy, since he wanted them to live in communities. The Rule of St Augustine is followed today by the different Augustinian Congregations, the Premonstratensians (Norbertines) and Dominicans, among others. We wish them all a very happy Feast!

Saturday was the feast of St John Kemble, a Jesuit and local martyr, whose missal and relic are kept at St Francis Xavier’s Church, Hereford, where Dom James and Dom John are currently working. A good crowd assembled for the Mass, at which Dom Anselm, Dom John and Dom Augustine from Belmont sang the plainchant, and we ended with a rousing rendition of Faith of our Fathers, before blessing the new banner and for the first time setting off to Widemarsh Common, Hereford, where St John was hanged as a Catholic priest, and therefore a traitor, in 1679 at the age of nearly 80.

Today we keep the Memoria of St Bernard of Clairvaux. He entered the monastery of Cîteaux with about 30 friends, including 4 of his brothers, and later founded the monastery of Clairvaux. Under his leadership the monastery grew and grew, so that there were several hundred monks and many foundations spread throughout Europe. He is renowned for the discipline of his religious life, his prayer and his devotion to the Virgin Mary. He is said to have written the Memorare.
This window is Belmont Abbey and shows the centrality of Mary in St Bernard’s spirituality, along with Christ.

Feast of St Laurence, who when told to gather the treasures of the Church for the Emperor, gathered together all the poor, blind, lame etc. He was martyred by being, as it were barbecued, and is said to have joked with the executioners that it was time to turn him over, since he was done on that side.
This painting is in St Laurence’s chapel Downside Abbey - Basilica of St Gregory the Great
