Four celebrations this Sunday!

Watch the sun rise on Whiteleaf Hill, and celebrate with Churches Together.
Join us at 8am for a service of Holy Communion according to the Book of Common Prayer - a quiet, simple service.
Rejoice together at our All-Age Eucharist, 10am; a joyful, vibrant service where we will celebrate the resurrection, and again light the Easter Candle, symbolising Christ’s triumph over death. If you wish, please bring something noisy to shake or rattle!
And at 6pm, come to hear of those who witnessed the resurrected Christ.

A service of wonder, as our Easter celebrations start.
Our worship begins in quiet and relative darkness; the Easter candle is then lit, symbolising Christ’s rising from the tomb. Gradually, other candles are lit, reminding us that we, too, share Christ’s risen life and share His light with the world.
We then hear readings witnessing to God’s love in creation, and telling of the redemption that only Christ brings.
Finally, we joyfully shout that Christ is risen, and fill the Church with light, music, and sound– if you wish, please bring something noisy to shake or rattle! We then celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter. All welcome!

Our 2pm service is solemn service of prayer and devotion, where we mark Jesus’ death on the cross.
During the service, a cross is placed in the middle of the church, to help us meditate on the enormity of Christ’s sacrifice for us. There are moments of silence to give time and space to pray.
The service will include sharing the sacrament of Holy Communion, shared using the bread that was blessed at our Maundy Thursday Eucharist. The bread is brought from the ‘Altar of Repose’ in the Wilberforce Chapel with great
solemnity, echoing the sadness with which Christ’s friends would have carried His body from the cross to the tomb.

On Maundy Thursday, we celebrate the Eucharist in a service which incorporates some additional elements that recall the events of the night of the Last Supper.
Much of our service follows the familiar pattern of a service of Holy Communion.
After we have shared Communion, the sacrament (the bread that has been blessed and become for us Christ’s body) which has not been consumed in this service is taken, with great solemnity, to the ‘altar of repose’ in the Wilberforce Chapel. This echoes the journey that Christ and His disciples took
after the Last Supper to the Garden of Gethsemane.
After some prayer, there is a short pause. We then hear the words of Psalm 22 – some of which Jesus would speak on the cross on Good Friday. Whilst the Psalm is read, the church is stripped of many of its linens and adornments, echoing the fleeing of the disciples at Christ’s arrest.
When the Psalm has been read and the stripping of the church is completed, our service is at an end.
As the service ends, there is the opportunity to stay in vigil near the altar of repose, which recalls the disciples’ watching over Jesus as he prayed for the strength to face the ordeal that lay ahead.
You are free to leave in silence whenever you wish; the Watch lasts for an hour, and will end with a short piece of scripture.
