Saint Ephrem, 9th June - born in Nisibis (modern Turkey) in 306, Saint Ephraem was a poet and a theologian. He lived all his life in Mesopotamia, first founding a school and then, when the Persians invaded his native town of Nisibis, moving to Edessa. He preached there, and laid the foundations of its great school of theology. He is famous not only for the beauty of expression of his homilies but also for his hymns, which have spread far beyond his native Syriac church and are in use in East and West alike.

Saint Norbert (1080 - 1134) 6th June -Saint Norbert (1080–1134), born into a noble family in Xanten, initially led a comfortable and worldly life at influential courts. At age 35, a near-death experience inspired a profound change, leading him to become a priest devoted to reform and preaching. Facing opposition and accusations from local clergy, he gave away his possessions and received papal approval to preach widely across France and Germany.

He founded a religious community at Prémontré, which grew into the Premonstratensian Order. Later appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg, Norbert worked to reform corruption in the diocese, which earned him strong resistance and even attempts on his life. He also evangelised local pagans and remained dedicated to his mission until his death in 1134.

THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST - The Eucharist—the Body and Blood of Christ—is a profound mystery, far more than something we simply receive. It is a living relationship that transforms us: “Receive what you are—the Body of Christ.”

In the readings, we are reminded that through the Eucharist, Christ lives within us: “…who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in them.” Just as God once journeyed with His people and nourished them with manna, Jesus now walks with us, sharing His life through the gifts of the Last Supper. As Saint Paul teaches, this communion with Christ also unites us with one another, making us, together, His living Body—the Church.

St Boniface, 5th June - born in Devon c675, For the first forty years of his life Boniface was known as Wynfrith. He was born in Devon and educated at the monastery at Exeter, and then joined the Benedictine abbey at Nursling, near Southampton. He was a teacher and preacher, but he desired to preach the gospel in a foreign land. In 718, Pope Gregory II commissioned him to do so, at the same time changing his name from Wynfrith to Boniface. Boniface left England, never to return, and took the gospel to the heathen tribes of Germany, where he had great success. He himself was created Bishop of Mainz, and he founded or restored dioceses in Bavaria, Thuringia, and Franconia. In his later years he worked with King Pepin the Short to reform the Frankish church, and then, over seventy years old, set out to evangelize Friesland (part of modern Holland) where he was set upon and murdered, on 5 June 754. He is buried at Fulda, near Frankfurt, in the monastery he founded himself, and is honoured as the apostle of Germany.

St Charles Lwanga: Mwanga, 3rd June - ruler of Uganda in 1885-1887, Many Christians, Catholic and Protestant, were killed by the Ugandan king Mwanga. Some of them were servants in the king’s palace or even his personal attendants. Charles Lwanga and his twenty-one companions (the youngest, Kizito, was only 13) were executed for being Christians, for rebuking the king for his debauchery and for murdering an Anglican missionary, for “praying from a book,” and for refusing to allow themselves to be ritually sodomised by the king. They died between 1885 and 1887. Most of them were burned alive in a group after being tortured. Within a year of their deaths, the number of catechumens in the country quadrupled. St Charles Lwanga is the patron of Catholic Action and of black African youth, and the Ugandan martyrs’ feast day is a public holiday in Uganda.

Ss Marcellinus and Peter (- 304) 2nd June - Pope St Damasus I dedicated his life to establishing and strengthening the Church after the great persecutions, and took much care over the restoration of the Roman catacombs and the proper burial of the martyrs there, including Marcellinus and Peter. As a boy, Damasus had heard the story of these martyrs from their executioner. Marcellinus was a priest, Peter was not. They were beheaded during the emperor Diocletian’s persecution, and buried on the Via Labicana outside Rome. After the persecutions, a basilica was built over the site of their tomb.

St Justin - 1st June - St Justin (c. 110–165), a Greek-born seeker of truth from Samaria, explored various philosophies before converting to Christianity through Platonism. As a layman, he devoted his life to teaching and defending the Christian faith, travelling widely and later founding a philosophical school in Rome, where he produced some of the earliest surviving Christian writings. During Emperor Marcus Aurelius’s persecution, he was arrested and executed. Justin believed that elements of truth exist in all philosophies, seeing them as partial reflections of a single divine truth. He taught that when engaging with others, Christians should respect these truths and guide people towards their fulfilment in Christ, rather than dismissing or opposing them outright.
