10th Year Memorial of Nicos Papaphotis

This Sunday, we gather in prayerful remembrance of Nicos Papaphotis, marking ten years since his falling asleep in the Lord.

Nico was one of the founding trustees of our church, and with deep faith and courage he placed his name—together with the other trustees—behind the £450,000 loan that allowed us to purchase our church in 2004. Through the grace of God, the love of the community, and the tireless efforts of all who contributed, that debt has long been repaid, and while the church restoration is not complete, it is sustained as a living house of worship.

As we commemorate Nico, we do so in the spirit of the Orthodox tradition: offering prayers for the repose of his soul, entrusting him to the mercy of Christ, and giving thanks for the good he accomplished in this life. His service, his generosity, and his willingness to sacrifice for the sake of the Church are remembered before God.

We also honour all those who stood with him over the past quarter-century and in the many years before—those whose faith, labour, and love helped build and preserve this spiritual home.

Nico is remembered not only for his dedication, but for his warm smile, his love for his family, and his embrace of the wider church family. May the Lord grant him rest in a place of light, a place of green pasture, a place of refreshment, where there is no pain, sorrow, or sighing, but life everlasting.

May his memory be eternal.

Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing away of our beloved parishioner Ioulia. Who passed away at the age of 102 years old.

She was a gentle, loving member of our community that never had a bad word to say about anyone. Her faith kept her well and humbled over a long life.

Two years ago we had the honour to celebrate her 100th Birthday here at St Anthony's and made this short video showing her life and the world events that intersected her journey.

Congratulations to Nitsa Sergides on winning the Mayor of Islington civic award 2024!

Nitsa Sergides has served Islington as an exemplary educator. Her services to education have been recognised in the past by being awarded an OBE by our late Queen.

This award recognises that her efforts went far beyond taking care of the educational needs of her pupils, it acknowledges her love and care for the wider community of Islington over more than 50 years service.

We are very proud of our Nitsa.

We will be holding a bake sale on Sunday the 19th February, to raise money for the running costs of the church.

We will have lots of sweet and savoury treats on offer to enjoy before the Lenten fast begins. Hopefully see you all there.

Wishing you a Blessed Triodion!

Here is a photo posted by Christopher Christos on our google business profile of our church many years ago.

Would love to hear your thoughts about the changes over the years.

What year was this taken?

Are those coal sheds? When were they removed?

Looks like the big building opposite the church (that housed the first 99p store ever) wasn't even built then.

Look forward to seeing your comments.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
1926-2022

May her memory be eternal!

We would like to convey our condolences to our new King, the royal family and all our fellow citizens. We have lost a devout Christian leader and servant of the people, who was always the constant in all our lives.

We would also like to proclaim, "God Save the King!" and extend our heartfelt wishes and pray that Our Lord will guide and protect him.

One of our parishioners (Jenny Assiminios) has already expressed our heartfelt wishes - slightly more emphatically than we would have - just in case you may have missed her kissing his Majesty - here is one of many links available:

We would also like to share the moment Her majesty bestowed an OBE on our Chair, Nitsa Sergides in 2011

Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia - Belated Tribute and thanksgiving.

Following on from his funeral yesterday and all the obituaries the world over, we would like to add our few words.

Some in our parish had the pleasure of attending many of his lectures as well as reading his popular books on the Orthodox faith. His kind words and great story telling always made you feel comfortable in his presence, his vast academic and theological knowledge was always made accessible and understandable to all in their own measure - but all felt uplifted and more knowledgeable , as well as entertained by his whit too.

We were blessed years ago when he accepted Father Ephrem's invitation to come and preside at our patronal day Liturgy with us. I thought it would be fitting to share some of the photos on that day.

May his memory be eternal!
