Last weekend one of our team stepped in to take part in a patrol last minute after we were a bit short.

What a blessing!

It’s always ideal to approach every weekend with a full strength team already to go. And to have enough volunteers that we can plan weeks in advance to know every patrol will be covered.

But it’s not always that easy. Everyone is putting in time at the end of the week to give what the can to the Lord in serving in this way.

And sometimes things just don’t work out the way we planned.

Imagine finishing the day job and then agreeing to step in for a patrol.

We thank God for all the servant hearted street pastors.

And we always welcome anyone interested to find out how to join the team!

Maybe this is your opportunity to give us more strength in depth?

We decided to stay in the Guildhall area due to one of our team not feeling well. As the night went on, our team member became very unwell.

Two of our team picked up our new wheelchair from Safe Space while the rest waited with the unwell Street Pastor who wasn’t able to walk. The paramedics came back from Safe Space with our team members and the wheelchair. They decided to take the unwell Street Pastor back to Safe Space and the paramedics decided that he needed to be taken to QA to be thoroughly assessed. The rest of the team carried on before returning to base just before 3am.

Sometimes our patrol nights really don’t go to plan.

We do all the preparations, we pray, we go out, and then a curveball is thrown.

This time it was with one of our own.

We know that anything is possible through Christ who strengthens us. And yet, we still carry around our physical bodies that have their limitations. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and so when they begin to show signs of malfunction, we have to take note, listen and stop.

The Bible tells us that as Christians we must make every effort to enter God’s rest. Rest is a gift from God. It is something to take seriously.

Even on the busiest of days we can find the opportunity to rest — to enjoy his presence and make sure we’re staying close to him.

Please pray for our teams; for full health for those out tonight, and those who are recovering; may they be healed and restored, in Jesus name.

Have you ever tried to carry a sofa into your home on your own?

Don’t. It’s not possible. It needs at least two people to complete such a big and awkward task!

In the same way, helping in the streets of Portsmouth at the weekend is not a one person job.

Last weekend, we came across an unresponsive man outside the train station being helped by two girls, who didn’t know him. The girls had phoned for an ambulance and we stayed with the man as he gradually came around and handed him into the care of the paramedics, when the ambulance arrived. We went over to Safe Space and saw that it was open and our wheel chair was there to be used. We then moved on to another club where two student nurses were looking after an intoxicated girl in the beer garden. We fetched the wheelchair and took the girl to Safe Space.

What a picture of teamwork!

And for us, there is also God.

We see our evenings as an act of worship, where we aim to carry the presence of God with us wherever we go and help out by his leading and the strength and wisdom he gives us.

Of course, nothing is impossible for our God. He can sort things out in an instant. But he loves to work through people. He called us to bear fruit and multiply - not just sit there in comfort and assume he’ll do it all himself.

We love coworking in the city, with our local community out there, and also with Jesus!

Would you love to cowork with us? Contact us to join other new volunteers coming on board right now.

On a recent patrol a police van stopped by one of our teams to ask for our help to locate a man with dementia who had gone missing in the area.

Door staff showed us a picture of the man and the team stayed in the area to help the search, while continuing to help those we met, including those who had had quite a bit to drink.

Police soon confirmed that the missing man had been found.

We then moved on to the city centre and soon encountered a group of women, one of whom believed she had been spiked.

Along with her friends we helped the girl to Safe Space where her vitals were found to be normal by paramedics.

While her friends were waiting outside Safe Space, a man joined the group. We monitored this and then agreed with paramedics to allow all the girls inside until a friend arrived by car to collect the girls and transport them to QA Hospital for the potentially spiked girl to get blood tests.

We are so grateful that, whether for an old man suffering with dementia and lost, or a young women feared to have been spiked and being intimidated, we are able to offer a presence on the streets of Portsmouth, aiming to bring everyone back to a safe and calm place.

Challenges come, often uninvited. Yet, whether they are internal or external, for those who put our faith in Jesus, we know at the source there is the peace of the Holy Spirit and the love of our caring, compassionate, Father God, who ensures that we do not get swept up in the storms of life, and we will, indeed, return home safe.

Stay safe everybody, and look out for one another.

May God bless this city at this time.

We recently came across a lone man in Guildhall Square who was sat on the Charles Dickens statue. He had no shoes or coat and told us he had been robbed.

While we were talking, not far from us was the famous lion statue, standing with authority, strength, victory.

Jesus is know as the Lion of Judah. Authority. Victory. Strength. That’s what a lion is all about.

When the Lion of Judah is nearby, even if you’re in a desperate situation, you won’t remain robbed and without clothes, but instead you get to walk in his authority, victory and strength.

That’s the strength of a lion. That’s what we walk in as street pastors in Portsmouth.

It’s a problem none of us would want to experience.

Going about our day, and then feel a pain in the chest.

It’s the last thing you would expect or prepare for on a night out.

This was exactly the case for a member of the public who was out enjoying a night in Southsea last weekend.

Police called our team to support this man who seemed to be on his own at this point. We assessed the situation and called the ambulance which - thank God - arrived in minutes to deal with him.

We are grateful that we could help in this way, thanks to a move of God and the solid training we receive with Street Pastors. And we’re thankful that this is a rare incident.

But as we walk around on a Friday and Saturday night, we could still be amongst lots of heart problems.

Jesus was always able to see the condition of a person’s heart. He would often challenge wrong thinking and behaviour that was rooted in a damaged heart.

Today Jesus still looks at the condition of our heart - this is where our relationship with him belongs.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Let’s pray that God will heal heart problems while we’re out and about in our city’s streets tonight.

Staying in the library that extra hour before heading out to catch up with friends.

Choosing a career path that won’t earn you millions or make you famous.

Small decisions, big decisions, tomorrow’s heroes come from making the right ones.

On one of our patrol’s recently we bumped into a final year student nurse who wanted to learn more about Street Pastors.

We thank God for those people who decide to dedicate their lives to professions that save lives and improve people’s health.

Where would we be without them?

Jesus chose a direction in life that would not have been easy or pleasant. But it led to lives saved and health restored - and it’s still happening today.

We appreciate tomorrow’s heroes and the small and big decisions they make that means they will be tomorrow’s heroes.

We speak your language.

One of our team met a member of the public who was in distress, and ended up directing them to Safe Space in Swahili.

It can be daunting when you arrive in an unfamiliar place that speaks another language.

We are blessed to have a team made up of different nations who can speak different languages. This has always been the case with God’s church from the very start.

“When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

And when words aren’t enough, we know a deeper language that can reach any heart that is ready to receive it.

We speak your language.

He is alive.

When his disciples watched him die in the cross, they thought is was finished - all over.

And it was.

But not in the way they thought.

They mourned as everything they had been looking forward to appeared to have gone.

Jesus in his dying moments indeed say this: “it is finished”.

But that wasn’t about him.

It was about death. It was about our separation from Father God.

His death meant the wall standing between us and Him had just been well and truly demolished. For good.

He took the punishment for our own actions, then on the third day he rose back to life - just as it was always promised.

You may be thinking right now about a situation or promise in life that “it is finished”. Yet because we can now reach out to God personally, he can answer our prayers.

Why not call out to him now?

If you already know God personally, then let’s take this opportunity to pray for new life in this city we call home.

Happy Easter.

He carried the cross.

He did it for us. For the darkness inside that needed a light.

This is what Good Friday is about.

And now he asks us to do the same:

“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16‬:‭24‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Going to church isn’t that difficult. Following Jesus can be. But then he lightens the load when you walk closely with him.

When we go out on the streets at the weekend, we do so drawing close to Jesus so that we can carry that cross and help bring light to the darkness.

Would you join us in the mission?
