We're delighted to share that the Blount monument, found on the south wall of the north transept here at Portsmouth Cathedral, has been named Monument of the Month for June 2026 by the Church Monuments Society.

The monument commemorates Sir Charles Blount (c.1568–1600/01), a soldier who served under some of the leading military figures of the Elizabethan age, including the Earl of Leicester and the Earl of Essex. He died on the voyage home from his final campaign in southern Ireland.

The monument has had a remarkable journey. First recorded in an 1818 sketch as part of a group of memorials set against the east wall of the church, it has been moved, repaired, and repainted several times over the centuries, most recently in 1968. What we see today is almost certainly not its original form: heraldry and other elements appear to be missing, and the Church Monuments Society has produced a conjectural reconstruction of what the monument may originally have looked like.

You can read the full feature, including the reconstruction and the monument's full history, on the Church Monuments Society website: https://churchmonumentssociety.org/monument-of-the-month/monument-to-sir-charles-blount-d-1600-01?utm_campaign=coschedule&utm_source=facebook_page&utm_medium=Portsmouth%20Cathedral

A quick update on The Big Tower Top-Up.

We're working hard to raise £60,000 towards the repair of our historic timber belfry, with works due to start in August. If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, now is a great time.

And if you have already given, thank you. It genuinely means a lot. Please do share the appeal with friends and family who might want to be part of protecting Portsmouth's skyline.
