Chesil Churches

Chesil Churches We are a group of 4 Anglican churches in 3 parishes in beautiful West Dorset. Our services range from traditional too informal.

The churches make an idea pilgrimage walk. The walk from Abbotsbury takes you along the old railway line to Portesham and then along wonderful accessible walks to Langton Herring.

Today at Pentecost we think about our own call as disciples so all may flourish and grow. A simple rule of life to help us.

This Sunday our gospel reading is Mark’s narrative of the Transfiguration.

Within this passage the voice of God is heard to say “ ‘This is my Son, the Beloved;listen to him!’.

My question

“Are you listening to him”

The painting is by Chris Higham , a Christian artist .

Today the church celebrates Candlemas .

I saw this wonderful painting of Simeon in Norwich Cathedral many years ago .

Simeon giving us these wonderful words following his encounter with Jesus - the Nunc Dimittis.

1 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace :
according to thy word.
2 For mine eyes have seen :
thy salvation;
3 Which thou hast prepared :
before the face of all people;
4 To be a light to lighten the Gentiles :
and to be the glory of thy people Israel
Luke 2.29-32

Our Story

The benefice priest is Rev.Margaret Preuss-Higham, who fulfils the role as a House for Duty priests - giving 2 days a week and Sundays to the church, whilsts working as a mobile hairdresser 2 days a week. Her colleague Rev.Jeremy Brading is Priest in Charge of the benefice.

The Benefice consists of 3 parishes and 4 churches in West Dorset. The largest church is St.Nicholas in Abbotsbury and was part of the St.Peter’s Abbey. Two miles east of Abbotsbury is the village of Portesham, it’s church is dedicated to St.Peter and the base of the tower has pre-norman foundations. This church is linked to St.Bartholomew’s Chapel at Corton Farm. Travelling on towards Weymouth the third church in the benefice is situated in the small village of Langton Herring, this is also dedicated to St.Peter. Langton has the distinction of being a ‘ doubly thankful’ village, it was fortunate that all who went to war in both wars returned.

There is a school in Portesham where Margaret leads assembly each week and a christian after school club. Messy Church is held at St.Peter’s, Portesham on the 3rd saturday monthly. A craft group meets 3rd Tuesday monthly at St.Peter’s, Portesham and there is a healing service 3rd Monday monthly at Portesham.

Bible Study groups are held in Portesham and Abbotsbury
