“Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.” Psalm 140:4

We live in a world where evil is real, temptation is constant, and there are those who would gladly see the Christian stumble.

David knew what it was to face opposition, danger and enemies who sought his downfall. Yet his answer was not simply to trust in his own strength, he cried unto the LORD for protection.

“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped.” Psalm 28:7

The Christian life is not lived in our own strength. We need the Lord to keep us, preserve us, guide our steps and guard our testimony.

The enemy would love to overthrow our goings, discourage our hearts and draw us away from Christ. But our confidence rests in the One who is able to keep His people.

“Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.” Psalm 17:5

🙏 Our prayer today:

Lord, keep us from evil.
Preserve us from those who would lead us astray.
Guard our hearts, our homes, our families and our testimony.
Keep our feet firmly upon Thy paths and our eyes fixed upon Christ.

KEEP ME, O LORD.

Long before the Premier League, Champions League and the multi-million-pound world of modern football, 12 clubs came together in 1888 to form the Football League, the world's original league football competition.

The founder members were:

⚽ Accrington
⚽ Aston Villa
⚽ Blackburn Rovers
⚽ Bolton Wanderers
⚽ Burnley
⚽ Derby County
⚽ Everton
⚽ Notts County
⚽ Preston North End
⚽ Stoke
⚽ West Bromwich Albion
⚽ Wolverhampton Wanderers

The idea was driven largely by William McGregor of Aston Villa, who proposed that leading clubs should arrange regular home-and-away fixtures. The first Football League season kicked off on 8 September 1888, with Preston North End going on to become the first champions, unbeaten.

What began with just twelve clubs would help shape the football we know today.

But at Gospel Goal, football history also makes us think about something far greater.

Clubs are founded. Competitions are established. Stadiums are built. Generations of players and supporters come and go.

But God's Word remains.

“For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” Psalm 119:89

The Football League has endured for well over a century, but even the greatest institutions of this world are temporary. There is only one everlasting Kingdom and one eternal King.

“Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.”
Psalm 145:13

Football can give us wonderful history, memories and traditions, but it can never give us salvation.

That is found in Jesus Christ alone.

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

⚽ 12 clubs helped begin the Football League.

✝️ One Saviour alone can give eternal life.

Football is our mission field. Christ is our message. The Gospel is our goal.

MEN OF THE BIBLE — 1: NOAH

A Man Who Obeyed God

Noah lived in a world filled with wickedness, yet he chose to walk with God.

When God commanded him to build the ark, Noah obeyed, even though he could not yet see what was coming.

“By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house...” Hebrews 11:7

Noah reminds us that true faith does not merely hear God's Word, it acts upon it.

The world may mock. Others may refuse to understand. But God's people are called to trust Him and obey His Word.

Faith obeys God even when we cannot see the outcome.

“Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.” Isaiah 50:10

There are times in the Christian life when the road ahead seems dark.

We may not understand what God is doing. We may pray and still see no immediate answer. We may face disappointment, illness, bereavement, financial pressure, family difficulties or uncertainty about the future.

But notice what Isaiah says.

The person described here fears the LORD and obeys His voice, yet still finds himself walking through darkness.

Faithfulness does not mean that every path will be easy.

Sometimes God calls His children to trust Him when they cannot see what lies ahead.

The instruction is simple:

“let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.”

When you cannot see the way - trust the One who can.

When circumstances make no sense - stay upon your God.

When feelings tell you that you are alone — remember His promise:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

And David could say: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me…” Psalm 23:4

Christian, you do not need to know every detail of tomorrow.

You simply need to know the One who holds tomorrow.

And if you do not yet know Christ as your Saviour, come to Him today. Jesus Christ is still: “the way, the truth, and the life…” John 14:6

🙏 When the path is dark, trust His name.
When you cannot see, stay upon your God.

He is faithful.

This remarkable photograph shows Northern Ireland goalkeeper Harry Gregg leaving the field at Wembley Stadium in November 1957, after Northern Ireland had defeated England 3–2 at the “Home of Football.”

It was Northern Ireland’s first victory there since 1927, and the result helped them secure a share of the Home Championship.

Gregg could hardly have imagined how dramatically life would change. Only around three months later, he would be among the survivors of the terrible Munich Air Disaster, which devastated the great Manchester United side.

One photograph captures triumph. A few months later came tragedy.

It is a solemn reminder of how quickly circumstances can change.

“Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.” Proverbs 27:1

Football can give us wonderful memories, great victories and unforgettable occasions, but none of them can guarantee what tomorrow holds.

The Bible says: “For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”James 4:14

Our security therefore cannot rest in trophies, sporting success, health or even tomorrow itself. Our only sure refuge is in the Lord.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Harry Gregg walked from Wembley that November afternoon in triumph. Within months he would face circumstances no football match could ever prepare him for.

Whatever today brings, make sure your greatest hope is not in the victories of this world, but in Jesus Christ, the only Saviour.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Acts 16:31
