Our Bible Lesson this week exposes "Unreality" to be the sum of all human fears. And that the converse is also true - all human fears are of something absolutely unreal. All that is real comes from our spiritual creator. Our spiritual creator did not make evil or discord. Without fear of lack or failure, Moses found food and water for the multitudes in the wilderness. Without fear that there may be anything impossible to God, Jesus healed the sick. When we ask for help in spiritual healing from a Christian Science practitioner, the healer has no fear that Christ will not heal, or that Christ is not ever-present. We can be grateful that medical systems heal many, but they spread whirlwinds of fear that our well-being depends on a constant need to be tested and treated for an ever-growing range of maladies.

Sat Sri Akal

When I first turned to this week's lesson on the topic "Truth" I thought of the Sikh Punjabi greeting "Sat Sri Akal". There are various translations but the one I like - which I believe is an authentic one - is

"God is the Ultimate Truth".

In modern times we are so used to scientists looking into the minute details of biology, cosmology or quantum physics to tell us the truth about ourselves, our origin, our future.
There were plenty of theories about creation in the old days as well.
But since the idea of the One True God came to the minds of the Old Testament patriarchs there has evolved an understanding that God creates our life in a totally different way to the conclusions reached from observing the material world with our physical senses.

This newness - a spiritual rebirth - came to our understanding most strikingly with the coming of Christ Jesus.
In this week's lesson as well as reading of Jesus' amazing healing work, we read of his walking on the water. The more we read the Gospels the more the story of Jesus, intertwined with the story of his disciples, unfolds to us as a true record - "impossible" though some of the events would seem. Peter is one of the older disciples, famously has his human doubts which he recovers from, and is quick to respond to situations. When he sees Jesus on the water, his response is "can I have a go?" He suceedes, but briefly. Jesus gently chides him for doubting. Thus we learn that the power of overcoming material forces was not a magical power belonging only to Jesus, it was a question of believing. In our lesson we have Mary Baker Eddy's definition of "Believing":

'not a faltering nor a blind faith, but the perception of spiritual Truth'

So the truth is this: we are created spiritually by God, who is the Ultimate Truth - and our true being is not limited by the laws of matter.

I went to one of these events in my early twenties and found out about Christian Science. In the decades since I've experienced a lot of life and done a lot of thinking, and made thoughtful study of Christianity and the Old Testament - and had a look at the Quran. I remain convinced since my first discovery of it that Christian Science has a complete answer to why and how we should believe in God. Adrian Whiteley

The "Render unto Caesar" verse is part of our lesson on "Truth" this week. Let's know the Truth about ourselves - that we are spiritual children of a spiritual Creator, not the limited and care-worn strugglers that mortal history would make us. Let's render ourselves to God in our true spiritual identity.

We're back to having services in our Church at Ashley Cross (on the way to St Peters Church from the traffic lights on Commercial Road). This week's theme is Adam and Fallen Man. Join us to hear some new ideas about the significance of the Creation story.

"Adam, represented in the Scriptures as formed from dust, is an object-lesson for the human mind. The material senses, like Adam, originate in matter and return to dust, — are proved non-intelligent. They go out as they came in, for they are still the error, not the truth of being. When it is learned that the spiritual sense, and not the material, conveys the impressions of Mind to man, then being will be understood and found to be harmonious." - Mary Baker Eddy
