Saint Helen's Church, Hemsworth The Parish Church of Hemsworth

Worship and Open Times this week: https://parishofhemsworth.org.uk/ThisWeek

For anyone who has ever worshipped at, got/getting married at, been associated with, or simply marvelled at Hemsworth's beautiful Parish Church

S Helen's is the Parish Church of Hemsworth. We are a friendly, welcoming congregation seeking to serve God by serving the people of Hemsworth. For over 800 years the people of Hemsworth have come to S Helen's in times of sorrow and in times of joy and it

continues to be a place of quiet and reflection in our busy world. S Helen’s is a parish of The Society and is firmly rooted in the Catholic Tradition of the Church of England. We are in the Pastoral Care of the Bishop of Wakefield. Daily, the Mass is offered, the offices of Morning and Evening are celebrated and confessions are heard

This morning we were extremely grateful to Fr Mark Lyon for covering the Sung Mass which enabled Fr Robert to help out at St Lawrence Parish Church, York Whilst he was there Fr Robert was delighted to learn that Fr John Richardson who had been Rector of Hemsworth 1977-1979 had subsequently been the parish priest of St Lawrence's 2004-2006

Compassionate God,
your word calls labourers to the harvest.
Send us who are blest with the gift of your kingdom
to announce its coming with gladness
and to manifest its healing power.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

Saturday Night Reminder
Before you rest this evening, don’t forget: tomorrow is the Day of the Lord!
Make Sunday truly holy by joining the Sacrifice of the Mass. It is there we encounter Christ in the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith.

We have Sunday Masses at 8.00am and 9.45am. During the 9.45am Mass we also have our Children's group. We do hope you will join us.

Not sure what church is like and have got questions? Head over to our "I'm new" page where hopefully there'll be an answer: parishofhemsworth.org.uk/New

‘O indescribable beauty of God most high! O pure radiance of everlasting light! O life that gives life to all life! O light that illuminates every light, and preserves in its undying splendour the myriad flames that have shone before the throne of your godhead from the dawn of time!'

From S Bonaventure in the Office of Readings

Today is the 20th Anniversary of Fr Robert becoming the Rector of Hemsworth. At mass this evening he prayed for mercy for his inadequacies and failing, gave thanks for the many graces we have received and, prayed for God's blessing on what lies ahead.

Stephen our bishop has sent us a lovely message for the Feast of the Sacred Heart (that we celebrate today - Mass at 5.30pm). He also encourages us to sign up for the wonderful Northern Festival at York Minster on 18 July. All the details are here: seeofbeverley.org.uk/Festival Folks from Hemsworth are encourage head over to the See of Beverley website to find out all the details. But they're encouraged not to book there but to sign up in church. We're planning a bus from Hemsworth and we need to know numbers ASAP.

All ye who seek a comfort sure
in trouble and distress,
whatever sorrow vex the mind,
or guilt the soul oppress,

Jesus, who gave himself for you
upon the cross to die,
opens to you his sacred heart:
O to that heart draw nigh.

Ye hear how kindly he invites;
ye hear his words so blest—
'All ye that labour come to me,
and I will give you rest.'

There are so many exciting things coming up we thought we'd best have a "head's up" post to remind us of it all.

All welcome to these great events.

Did you know that this year is the 800th anniversary of the canonization of S William of York? His feast day was on Monday (when unfortunately we were unable to have a Mass). We shall therefore celebrate a Votive Mass of S William at 10.30am today. All welcome.

S William of York was a devout Archbishop of York who lived during tumultuous time. At Mass we shall pray for Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, the 98th Archbishop of York and Bishop Stephen Race of the See of Beverley, his suffragan.

Almighty God,
the light of the faithful and shepherd of souls,
who set your servant Saint William of York
to be a bishop in the Church,
to feed your sheep by the word of Christ
and to guide them by good example:
give us grace to keep the faith of the Church
and to follow in the footsteps
of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

A note about the second photo to illustrate this posting:

This is a photo of the arms of the Archbishop of York which are incorporated into our reredos. From well before S William's day until 1928 the Parish of Hemsworth was in the Archdiocese of York. Interestingly we know that a Fr William was Rector of Hemsworth in 1160 (just 6 years after S William's tragic death). Was it possible that S William visited this parish and celebrated the sacraments here? Is it even possible that S William appointed the Fr William who was still here in 1160?

Devotion to the Sacred Heart in Hemsworth:

Like her big cousin at the West end of York Minster, the tracery in the East window at S Helens (which dates back to the 14th Century) also contains the motif of a heart ❤️. Both remind Christians of their special calling to show forth the divine compassion in the world today.

In the mid 1990s a previous statue of the Sacred Heart featured in the film ‘Brassed Off’.

To this day the image of the Sacred Heart remains a popular focus for devotion and learning.

A beautiful collections of prayers on the theme of the Sacred Heart is available in church and here:

We celebrate the feast of the Sacred Heart this Friday with Mass at 5.30pm.

All welcome.
