A statement from the Pocklington Group of Churches:

We are deeply sorry for the distress caused to families by the recent removal of items from graves in the churchyard of St Martin’s, Hayton. We recognise that this was not handled with the care and sensitivity families should have received, and we apologise for the hurt caused.

New national Churchyard Regulations recently came into effect across the Diocese of York, including rules about what may and may not be placed on graves. However, in seeking to apply the regulations, we did not communicate with families as effectively as we should have done.

Anyone who would like further information is asked to contact the Church Office at [email protected] or on 01759 306045. Items previously removed have been recovered and are available for collection inside St Martin’s church porch.

We understand that people are upset and have every right to raise concerns. Responsibility for resolving these concerns rests with Pocklington Group of Churches and the Diocese of York, and we ask that they are directed to the Church Office rather than at individuals.

Celtic Bard Olivia Graham set to perform at All Saints church

Thanks to its 21st century archaeology, Pocklington became known around the globe for its Celtic culture. And there’s Celtic music with a difference on Saturday, August 8 when ‘Celtic Bard’ Olivia Graham performs in All Saints church at 7pm.
The York-based multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and storyteller is coming to Pocklington as part of her Yorkshire summer tour called Legend and Lore.
The performance is billed as: “a deep-dive into the stories – true and imagined – that shaped the British Isles we know today. The two-act show is a magical evening of original and traditional music woven together with captivating bardic storytelling”.
Saturday promises to be a little bit different from the rest of the tour spots.
Olivia is as equally keen on Celtic heritage as its music; and following discussions with Pocklington Heritage Trust about the local finds from the era, she is looking to include something just about Pocklington on Saturday.
In return, the heritage trust will be displaying its replica of the Pocklington Shield – described by experts as “the most important British Celtic art object of the millennium” – which was discovered in 2019 in the town as part of a unparalleled Celtic chariot burial.
