On Sunday we continued delving into 1 John, with some much-needed encouragement. John wants his readers to know that they have “passed the test” – they are holding onto the real truth about the real God; they have been forgiven by Jesus; they have overcome the devil. And so now they need to keep holding onto what they know to be true – not getting led astray by attractive-looking worldly pleasures or attractive-sounding worldly teaching.

Our children and young people met Esther, a brave young Jewish queen, raised quite suddenly to a position of influence in a foreign nation – and at just the right time. God had a big job for her to do, to rescue His people! What jobs does God have for us to do? Will we be brave enough to do them?

This Sunday we continue in the book of 1 John with some key encouragements that lead to some key imperatives: we know that we hold the truth - so we need to hold onto the truth in the face of temptations and alternative options.

Each week we provide a Spotify Playlist of songs to go with the themes of the Bible passage. Click below to listen.

On Sunday we continued our tour through 1 John. We saw how John invites us to walk in God's light - the light of truth, purity, beauty and joy. But fortunately we're not expected to be sinless! Instead, we are expected to be honest about NOT being sinless, confessing to God and receiving the forgiveness won by Jesus' sacrifice - not BEING clean but COMING clean.
But that doesn't mean we can just carry on as we were: we need to commit to living Jesus' way, and especially to LOVING Jesus' way.

Our children and young people explored the huge job of rebuilding Jerusalem and the Temple when God's people returned from exile in Babylon. God's help in all this led them to praise Him. So how much MORE should we praise God who helped us by coming close to us through Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit!

This Sunday we continue our walk through 1 John as he opens up on the theme of walking in the light vs. walking in darkness. How can we tell whether we’re in the light, and in fellowship with God – or whether we’re just deceiving ourselves? John gives us 2 things to watch out for in our lives.

On Sunday we began our new series in the letters of John. 1 John opens with a vital reminder that John knows he speaks the truth about were real life is to be found. John is an eyewitness (in fact, an eye-, ear-, and hand-witness!) to what Jesus said and did. And so he knows that Jesus isn’t just any old man; He’s the Word of life – God Himself come to give us life by bringing us into fellowship with Him! So we know that John’s message is truth – and that it is the most precious treasure! How will knowing that change your relationship to the Bible and to Jesus?

Our children and young people dug into the sad story of the fall of Jerusalem, when God’s people were exiled from the Promised Land. Why did this happen? Because the people didn’t keep their promises to obey God, and God did keep His promise to punish them. Why does God let bad things happen to His people? And, when they do, what hope can we hold onto?

This Sunday we are beginning a new preaching series in John’s letters. 1 John opens with a clear statement of the truth of the gospel: eternal life appeared in Jesus, and His first disciples saw, heard and even touched that life! What is at stake in choosing whether or not to listen to their story is nothing less than fellowship with the God from whom eternal life flows. Are we listening?

On Sunday we saw the meteoric fall of king Saul. He obeyed God, but only up to a point. When it was risky, or culturally difficult, his obedience fell short – just as ours so often does. And when challenged about his disobedience, Saul’s repentance was shallow and half-hearted at best: deep down he just wanted to save face in front of his people. How is our repentance compared to Saul’s?
We need to remember that through the true King, the Lord Jesus, everything changes: He lived a life of perfect obedience, and His death freed us from the guilt of our failures of obedience – so we don’t have to try and talk our way out of trouble; we don’t have to save face. We can be brutally honest about our failures – and then in the power of the Holy Spirit we can pick ourselves up and give obedience to God our best all over again.

The children and young people looked at the story of king Josiah, a young man whose heart was broken when he realised just how far away from God his people had moved. He spent his life trying to obey God, and to call others to do the same. In doing so he was a shadowy forerunner of the perfect King, Jesus. What does “repent” mean, and how can we learn from king Josiah’s example of repenting?

This Sunday we see how, after a promising start, things quickly unravel for king Saul. The problem: he only listens and obeys up to a point – but God requires full obedience. And his lack of genuine repentance leads God to “repent” of making him king. How does our mix of obedience and repentance compare to Saul’s? And, vitally, how does Jesus – the perfect King – change the complexion of the story?
