Stoke Damerel Church

Stoke Damerel Church Welcome to Stoke Damerel Parish Church, an inclusive Anglo-Catholic Church in Plymouth, Devon.

Stoke Damerel is one of the oldest churches in Plymouth – there has been worship on this site for more than seven hundred years. We represent a broad tradition of liberal catholic Anglicanism, centred on our Sunday Eucharist, with an emphasis on mission especially among the vulnerable in the local community and in the city.

You might have noticed that Stoke Damerel Church is sporting a considerable amount of scaffolding! Currently we are being made watertight which is a huge relief. Please read the following account which explains how we have been able to afford this work to be undertaken.

Roof Repair Works Begin at Stoke Damerel Church

We are delighted to announce that essential roof repair works have now begun at Stoke Damerel Church, marking a significant step in the ongoing care and preservation of our historic building. These works include renewing slipped and broken slates across the main church roof slopes, installing a completely new roof on the choir vestry, repairing and replacing gutters and downpipes and renewing the lead on the bell tower roof. Together, these improvements will help safeguard the church for generations to come.

This vital project has only been made possible thanks to the generous giving of individuals and funding bodies. We are deeply grateful to our congregation and friends for their donations, legacies and the tireless efforts of all who have supported our fundraising activities. Your commitment and enthusiasm have been at the heart of this achievement.

We are also pleased to acknowledge the significant support received from several charitable organisations. Our thanks go to the Devon Historic Churches Trust, Garfield Weston, National Churches Trust and the Wolfson Fabric Repair Grant, Benefact Trust, The Leonard Laity Stoate Charitable Trust, Bernard Sunley Foundation and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Their contributions have made an extraordinary difference and enabled us to begin this important work in a timely manner.

Thank you to everyone who has played a part—large or small—in helping us reach this milestone. We look forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses.

We are so sorry that we have no access to our bell tower at the moment. This means our wonderful and faithful team of bell ringers are very frustrated! Due to the £160,000 repairs to our leaking roof, especially bell tower and organ loft, the tower access is covered in scaffolding!! The money has been raised by a very generous legacy from the late and very dear Canon Gordon Ruming plus successful matched funding applications: hours and hours of filling in forms by Rhona Prichard, one of our church wardens, and some of our fund raising events.
Because of work on the choir vestry roof, our sound system has had to be disconnected temporarily for safe storage, hence no live screening for the moment.
Thank you to all who have made these repairs possible. Raising funds to keep this ancient and sacred building watertight is no easy task!

Super first Christmas Fair Day. Another one tomorrow: do pop in. We have some really lovely gifts for sale.
