Tomorrow (Saturday 12th) at 10am St Mary’s Church will be open. There will be an illustrated lecture on how Laira grew around the transport infrastructure along the Plym Estuary and how this created the need for a church such as St Mary’s to be built. It will then describe some of the architectural features. After refreshments we will walk from the church to the Laira War Memorial, pointing out places along the way and the homes of soldiers who were killed in the First World War. The event is organised by the Historical Association but is open to everyone. It is free of charge, though we hope attendees will give a donation towards some urgent repairs required in the church.

Thank you all for joining us today at our 'Be Kind' Grounds Maintenance Day at St Mary's Church.

Your time, energy and willingness to serve made a real difference. Thanks to your hard work, alongside the fantastic team from Babock, we were able to refresh our gardens, clear pathways and create a more welcoming environment for both our community and local wildlife.

It was encouraging to see so many people come together with a shared purpose: caring for God's creation and helping our church grounds flourish once again. The transformation achieved in just a few hours is a testament to what can be accomplished when people work together with kindness and generosity.

Thank you for helping us turn overgrown spaces into places of beauty, welcome and life.

We're delighted to announce the date of the first Friends of St Mary's Inaugural Meeting, which will take place on Tuesday 29th September at 7:30pm.

The purpose of the meeting is to establish a steering group that will work with the local community to explore and shape the future use of St Mary's. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone with an interest in the building, its heritage, and its role within the community to become involved.

Everyone is warmly welcome to attend, and we look forward to gathering ideas, enthusiasm, and support as we begin this important journey together.

We have had a blessed week at st Mary’s! Our visitors from Kenya - (Thika diocese) came to look round and loved it. Archdeacon Joseph particularly liked the significance of the altar and the symbols. THEN we had the drone survey of the roof to see exactly what we need to do to repair and stop the water. We are hoping to be able to bid for grant funding from Historic England - we are waiting to hear if we are invited to put an application in. Please continue to pray for this beautiful and special place.

Saturday September 12th at 10am there will be a talk and tour of St. Mary's Church in Laira. It will talk about the history of the building but place it in the wider context of the growing communications artery of Laira.

Although this is a free event we hope to collect donations on the day and all the money collected are to help fund vital repairs needed for the building.

Any questions please contact the speaker: Stephen Luscombe [email protected]
