UCB Word for today:

How to forgive
27 March 2025
‘Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.’
Ephesians 4:32 NKJV

In 1982, John Hinckley Jr attempted to take the life of President Ronald Reagan by shooting him with a handgun. Reagan’s daughter, Patti, later recounted what she learned from her father when he was in hospital: ‘My father said he knew his physical healing was directly dependent on his ability to forgive John Hinckley…It showed me that forgiveness is the key to everything…He gave me an example of Christ-like thinking.’

Sometimes the wounds that others inflict on us are unintentional, and other times they are deliberate. But in both cases the Scriptures give us a clear standard concerning the wrongs we experience. You are to forgive those who hurt you, ‘even as God in Christ forgave you’. That’s a high standard, but it’s one that brings healing for our deepest wounds.

Sometimes we dispense forgiveness like a soft drink from a vending machine – mechanically, and with no feelings attached. But the Bible says two attitudes should accompany forgiveness: kindness, which is expressed in our actions, and tender-heartedness, which is expressed in our attitudes. Why? Because that’s the way God forgives us.

Throughout Scripture we find emotions such as kindness, gentleness, compassion, and tenderness – in word or by action – ascribed to God. We also find examples of it in the lives of those God used to fulfil His plans and purposes. Joseph was one of them, when he forgave his brothers who betrayed him. And He calls on us to do the same. This kind of forgiveness is as much an act of the heart as it is an act of the will.

A CHILD’S BROKEN HEART

Teardrops trickled down her cheeks,
and filled her little eyes.
Her aching heart was heavy,
as she wept, and sighed.
Her daddy had just walked out the door,
would she see him anymore?
Was she ever again to sit upon his knee,
cuddling up in his warmth as they watched TV?

Could it be her fault that he had gone?
He said he would always love her,
would he be back before too long?
How she would miss his goodnight kiss,
as he tucked her into bed,
And the funny stories which he told,
as he tenderly stroked her head.

Confusion raced through her tiny mind,
trying in some way, reason to find.
She loved him so, how would he know,
she hadn't time to tell him so.
Where would she go, what would she do,
if mummy left her too?

Why can’t we be a family, that’s how it is meant to be,
The three of us together, mummy, daddy and me.
She had heard the awful rows,
as she laid beneath her sheets,
Sobbing silently alone,
whilst they thought she was asleep.

Thirteen years ago today Pearl gained her angel wings and went to be with the Lord, to mark the occasion here's an apt poem from her collection.

MEMORIES

When a loved one leaves us, we are so very sad,
And we cling on to the memories, that life with them has had,
All of these are precious, and treasured in our minds,
Remembering with fondness, somehow,
Brings comfort to our lives.

We include them in our chatter, as if they were still here,
It helps us, to feel perhaps, somehow they are still near,
We think of all the little things,
Which brought to us such pleasure,
The love, or friendship, which blossomed into a treasure.,
A greeting, A smile, the warmth of a touch,
A look which says, "You mean so much",
Heartfelt kindly gestures, which brightened up the day.

Confidences shared, when life seemed dull, or grey.
Photographs, reminding us of good times that have passed.
Of the fun and of the laughter, which in our thoughts will last,
All these memories and more are in our treasure store,
But our Father up in heaven gives a promise of much more,
If on earth we have followed Him, faithfully day by day,
And asked Him to guide us onward, always in His ways,
We will be reunited, with loved ones who have passed on.

And together, when we meet,
We will praise God with heartfelt songs,
Around His throne we'll gather, His glorious face to see,
With peace and joy, within our hearts, to last through all eternity.

SOFTLY YOU COME TO ME

Softly You come to me in life's darkest hour,
A loving, comforting, strengthening power.
Your arms around me, strong and secure,
I am safe in the knowledge that You are near.
You raise me up, from deep, deep down,
When dank despair is all around.
Engulfed in the black cloud which surrounds me,
You break my chains and set me free.
I see Your face, so brightly shining,
This cloud then, has a silver linning,
Turmoil within, begins to cease,
What is this joy?
What is this peace?
Am I dreaming, is this real?
Can it be You Lord, that I feel?
Please pour new hope into my heart,
I surrender to You, my life, each part,
All that I am, all that I do.
Dear Lord, I am Yours, I trust in You.
My sinful heart is opened wide.
Come! Holy One, enter inside,
Guide me always in Your ways,
This is my plea, for this I pray.

WONDERFUL LOVE

Our Father's love is wonderful,
lt's steadfast, and it's true,
If we give our hearts to Him,
He will make us all brand new.

He touches us, like morning dew,
That freshens up the grass,
His Spirit will rain down on us,
We only have to ask.

Just kneel and pray, that He will send
His Spirit pouring in,
He'll give you grace and strength,
To fight temptations and all sin.

He'll walk along beside you,
Through bright or stormy weather,
And if we give our hearts to Him,
We'll live with Him forever.

OH! PERFECT LOVE
You bring me joy and peace within,
Give me freedom from my sin.
I wouldn’t know where to begin,
Without Your perfect love.
You send me blessings from above,
Family and friends to love.
Happiness, beyond compare,
I need You and You’re always there,
Oh! what perfect love.
I come before Your Mercy Seat,
Your nature Lord, is what I seek.
Make me gentle, kind and true,
Humble, patient, selfless too,
So that I may bring to You,
My never ending love,
Oh! perfect love.

ANGER
If we can answer anger,
With an understanding love,
We are giving pleasure
To our Father God, above.
For when He tells us,
We must turn the other cheek,
It is a sign of strength,
Not a sign that we are weak.
For anger only adds onto the fire,
Some extra fuel.
Turning what may be a tiff,
Into an all out duel.
The hurt it brings to both sides,
Is like the barb on wire.
Dragging down our inner souls,
Until we’re in the mire.
So when we feel our anger rise,
It’s never ever wise,
To let it rear its ugly head,
But turn to Father God instead.
Ask Him to fan the fire within,
To cool away all thought of sin,
So then He can begin,
To reconcile us to each other,
With love, befitting Christian brothers.

GOD CARES

The God who cares so gently,
for the sparrow in His hand,
Will guide you, and protect you,
and always understand.
When you are heavy laden,
not feeling at your best,
Just lay your burdens at His feet,
and He will give you rest.

He wants you to depend on Him,
to lead you through your life.
And if you put your trust in Him,
you will face a lot less strife.
So hold His hand, and walk with Him,
along life’s winding road,
The love that He will give to you,
is worth far more than gold.

THE MISSING LINK
Do you read the Bible?
If you don’t, oh! what you’re missing,
It's full of God’s instructions,
His plan for holy living.

How often do we look back,
On our lives with deep regret?
If we obeyed the Maker’s rules,
We’d have no need to fret.

He only wants what’s best for us,
To make our lives fulfilled,
But we are far too stubborn,
And self-willed.

He is our life-time guarantee,
For mending hurts, and woes,
He’ll solve our problems if we pray,
Because He always knows.

Give Him all your brokenness,
Let Him work within,
Repent! and ask forgiveness for your sin.

Be meek and humble, kneel and pray,
For He can take your cares away,
You will find an inner peace,
A zest again for living,
Because you’ve found the hidden link,
That had so long been missing.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Long, long ago, in a land far away,
a land far away in the East,
Joseph and Mary, so weary did stay
in a stable with oxen and beast.
No comforts were there, so they had to prepare
a bed made of straw and of hay.
For there in that place, so poor and forlorn,
her dear little baby was born.
A bright star settled over the place
where the gentle Jesus lay.
It gave out a light, to brighten the night,
guiding shepherds, their homage to pay.
Then came wise men, with their gifts
and their praise,
To the Babe who would one day, be King.
Not a King on a throne,
but a King to atone, for our sins.
Such humble beginnings, for Him,
who brought light to us all.
Let us bow down before Him in awe,
and be ready to answer His call.

WHAT KIND OF LOVE IS THIS?
What kind of love is this, coming from above?
Dwelling amongst us, in mercy and love.
How can we dismiss a love such as this?
Full of compassion, such goodness, such bliss.
A nature of Father and Mother combined,
Forgiving, faithful, pure and refined,
Never a love on earth, to compare,
Steadfast, dependable, always there.
He is our dear Sacrificial Lamb,
The First, the Last, the Great I Am,
He suffered agony on a cruel cross,
Pleading with His Father, for those who were lost,
Still, He pleads for you and me,
That we will be forgiven, when we come on bended knee,
He’s willing to call us, and draw us to Him,
If we humbly repent of our sin.
He opens eyes, which once were blind,
Gives a peace to our hearts, this world can’t find,
We were the reason He came on earth with man,
To save us, and cleanse us, for His Great Eternal plan.

A poem in celebration of what would have been Pearl's birthday.

OLD AGE

Help me in my frailty Father,
Now that my strength is gone.
Sometimes, it is such a bother,
Just to struggle on.

The dimness in my eyes
Which used to be so clear.
The dullness in my ears,
That strain so much to hear.

Stiffness in my limbs,
Confirming all my inner fears.
Old age doesn’t come alone they say,
That’s oh! so very true.

When I look back to younger years,
When I could work for You,
My inner being,
Still has plenty of zest and go.
But when I tell my body,
It just doesn’t want to know.

I suppose I’ll have to rest,
And be contented to do my knitting,
But Father, I still yearn and long
To do Your bidding.

What simple task can I perform,
To pass the time away?
I know! I’ll spend my time with You,
And pray, and pray, and pray.
